Greetings!

Pensive ToddlerI had the good fortune to join the board of Angels Foster Care earlier this year.  My husband, Tom Kenny, and I recently relocated from New York City where I served on the board of a pediatric hospital.  In Santa Barbara, I was searching for a meaningful way to use my skills to help children in need.  A good friend introduced me to Angels founder Michelle Arntz, and once I learned about the program, I was immediately intrigued.

My second career--after years of working as an investment banker on Wall Street--had been teaching math in the inner city.  Several of my high school students were products of the foster system, so I saw first hand the negative impact of bouncing from home to home.  To me, Angels was the ideal solution--stop the cycle before it starts.

I am looking forward to working with the staff and directors of Angels to continue to the mission of helping those who cannot help themselves.  And in doing so, I also hope to teach my own young daughters (5 years old and 1.5 years) the importance of giving back to others.

Social Worker Corner: Summer Travel

It's time for vacation! Many of our foster families are taking fun trips with their foster children this summer. Whether it is camping, road trips, tropical destination, theme parks, or visiting extended family, our kids get around and get to see a lot! We are grateful that the children under our care have so many opportunities. It is wonderful to see children being integrated into families and experiencing different places.

However, please keep in mind that these travel plans DO require planning. While foster parents are able to travel with their foster children, it does require permission from Angels and from the court. Also, visitation schedules with biological parents must be taken into consideration. If a foster parent wishes to travel with their child, they must notify their Angels Social Worker in advance.

For travel within the state of California, foster parents are able to communicate directly with Angels to obtain permission to travel. Requests for in-state travel should be submitted approximately two weeks in advance.

For out-of-state travel, Angels must submit a request to Child Welfare Services (CWS) to apply for a court order. This travel order is known as an "Ex Parte". The more complex the travel, the more complex the Ex Parte request becomes. Information such as means of travel, airline itineraries, lodging accommodations, and dates of travel must be included. Out-of-state travel requires a minimum of 4 weeks notice.  The "rule of thumb" is that the further the distance, and the longer the period of time of the trip, the more advance notice is needed.

As always, as much notice as possible is always appreciated and generally works out best for everyone!

The Last Word

"I know why families were created with all their imperfections. They humanize you. They are made to make you forget yourself occasionally, so that the beautiful balance of life is not destroyed."
