Weekly ORSL Friendship Tea

THIS THURSDAY: NPR Correspondent and Wiccan Priestess Margot Adler on Witchcraft, Vampires and the Environment (note new time)

Margot Adler has been a correspondent for NPR for 33 years, covering New York City, as well as politics and culture. A practicing Pagan since 1972, and an elder in the Pagan movement, she is the author of "Drawing Down the Moon: Witches, Druids, Goddess Worshippers and Other Pagans in America," the classic study of modern earth religions and women's spirituality. She is also the author of "Heretic's Heart", a personal memoir of the 1960s and 70s and her own activism in the civil rights and free speech movements. She is currently writing a book about vampires and their popularity in our culture. Sponsored by the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life.

Interfaith Vigil in Response to Anti-Muslim Film & Violence

Members of Oberlin's Muslim community and allies will gather to decry and mourn the recent anti-Islamic film and resulting violence around the world. Come together to process these events and to respond in prayer, mutual education, affirmation of shared values, and community building. Sponsored by the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life.

Immerse Yourself in Service (IYS) Interest Meeting

It's that time again... time to plan for your fall break! Immerse Yourself in Service is an alternative spring break student-led service group, and we want to invite you to our General Interest Meeting. We will be leading trips this year to New Orleans, Kentucky, Detroit, and West Virginia. At each of these sites, Oberlin students spend one week doing meaningful service work and getting to know the surrounding community. It is a great way to get to know your fellow Obies while working in areas of the country that are often very different from Oberlin.

Candidates' Night
Tuesday, 9/25, 7 pm, First Church in Oberlin (UCC)
Candidates for the newly-drawn 4th Congressional District will debate. Jim Jordan, the Republican incumbent, Jim Slone, Democrat, and Chris Kalla, Libertarian. This nonpartisan public event is offered as a service to the voting public by the League of Women Voters of the Oberlin Area. City council member and League member Sharon Soucy will introduce the participants as well as moderate the audience participation portion of the event through submitted questions. Questioning the candidates will be Andrew Young, editor of Elyria's Chronicle Telegram, Roy Church, president of Lorain County Community College, and Oberlin College geology professor Bruce Simonson. The Apostle Paul and Martyrdom with David Eastman

Dr. David Eastman will give a Mead-Swing Le cture entitled, "The Apostle Paul and 'True' Martyrdom in Early Christian North Africa." Eastman is Assistant Professor of Religion at Ohio Wesleyan University. His first book, "Paul the Martyr: The Cult of the Apostle in the Latin West" (2011), was on the early Christian veneration of the apostle Paul. Orthodox Speaker Series: Reardon on Christ and Syria
Friday, 9/28, 7 pm, West Lecture Hall
Father Patrick Henry Reardon will be speaking on his most recent book "The Jesus We Missed: The Surprising Truth About the Humanity of Christ." He will also be speaking on the Syrian conflict, as he was part of a 2011 Orthodox delegation sent to Syria by Metropolitan Philip to investigate the internal political situation in that country, particularly with respect to its Christian minority. Sponsored by Oberlin Orthodox Christian Fellowship.
