Navigating the Family Road Trip
 Summer is nearly here, which
means many families will be taking to the road for long and short journeys.
This is a great time for family bonding but can also be challenging, so here are five quick tips for making your trip a happy one:
- Old-fashioned
games: Being in the car CAN be a great time to unplug. Keep the kids
looking out the window at the changing world around them by reaching back
into your own car trip memories. We recommend the License Plate Game, I Spy, and 20 Questions for starters. While we don't necessarily advocate letting
your kids punch each other, we were delighted by the nostalgia in a recent
Volkswagen Super Bowl ad.
- Managing
motion sickness: Getting car sick can be a real drag for everyone, especially the poor child (or adult) who is susceptible. When we
were kids, doctors recommended letting kids sit in the front seat, which,
for mostly the under 12 set, is not safe. Instead, you can reduce the effects by making sure they have a nice
healthy breakfast before moving and keeping the tummy from being
completely empty, drinking water regularly, making stops (which, if they're
drinking water will be necessary), and not allowing reading while the car
is moving. As a backup, bring along over-the-counter medicine that
alleviate symptoms. For more details, we found this article.
