Holiday Wishes to Our Neighbors
All the world's end-of-year holidays arrive here and are forever stamped with our unique local melting pot of culture. From midnight Mass and bonfires on Christmas Eve, to latkes flavored with Tony Chasserie's on Hanukkah, to a soulful Kwanzaa with a Creole bent, to black-eyed peas and cabbage on New Year's--we don't play the holidays like everyone else! As we wish you the best this season, we encourage you to look around and appreciate what our little slice of Heaven has to offer. Enjoy!
Merry Christmas. Happy Hanukkah. Happy Kwanzaa and Winter Solstice. And, of course...Happy New Year from all of us at www.kidsandfamilyonline.com |
Holiday Surprises Right Here.
People come to our area from all over the world to experience our cultural riches. How many times have you been reminded of certain traditions in the area and said, "Ya know, I've always wanted to do that and it's a shame because it's just right there."
This is your year to do it! Our holiday celebrations offer the chance to pass along old traditions to the kids and build amazing memories.
Did you know that the Patio Planters have organized the Christmas Caroling the Sunday before Christmas in Jackson Square since 1946? This year, check out this free event at 7pm, Dec. 20.
Have you ever wondered about the true reason for the bonfires along the River? Did you know this custom was brought here from Europe long before Louisiana was a state and comes with a history that stretches back at least 1,000 years? Head toward the river in St. James Parish and find a spot to watch!
And, let's face it, north of the Lake, being a bit colder always seems to have a closer connection to that Christmas feeling. Now, in its sixth year, you can experience a Dicken's Christmas at the Christmas Past Festival in Old Mandeville. Dec. 12 from 9 am - 4 pm. The Scrooge contest is not to be missed.
What have you missed each year? Make a plan to do it this year and be sure to check out our events calendar for new and old traditions all around the region. Visit our continually updated events page for the latest calendar of things to do any time of year.
