MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR:
Joanne Headshot

Dear Friends,

This issue of HEALTHWISE is about Coordinated School Health: Putting It All Together.

Do these scenarios make sense to you?

  • The child who seeks out a school counselor for possible depression and is asked if s/he participates in any physical activity.
  • The cafeteria serving excellent healthy food that also focuses on environment, making sure that bullying behavior does not exclude any children during lunch period.
  • Health curriculum that teaches students about healthy food that also reaches out to educate parents.
  • A school concerned with lack of physical activity among students that starts a staff walking club for teachers to serve as role models.

These vignettes demonstrate schools working across health disciplines to insure the physical, psychological and social-emotional health of students.

They are part of a school health framework called Coordinated School Health, a Centers for Disease Control program that is presently being implemented by the PTA Health and Wellness teams in Glenfield and Mt. Hebron, and is being started at Bradford and Renaissance schools.

CSH is composed of eight health modules:

  • School Health and Safety
  • Health Education
  • Physical Education
  • Nutrition Services
  • School Health Services
  • School Counseling, Psychological and Social Services
  • Health Promotion for Staff
  • Family and Community Involvement

If your school or organization wishes to know more about how it can start a CSH team, please contact us at (973) 337-6853 or JAidala@montclairhealthandwellness.org .

Yours in good health,

                                                        Joanne Aidala,
