50 YEARS of CHORUS NIAGARA
The First Decade 1962-1971

Symphony Chorus 1960s
Niagara Symphony Chorus under the direction of
Milton Barnes about 1965
As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for Chorus Niagara, we plan a series of flashbacks to each decade of chorus life.  In this issue I had the pleasure of speaking to Helene Mathies who was one of the original 24 members in 1962.  Her husband Bert, a wonderful bass singer who loved Bach, had convinced Niagara Symphony conductor Leonard Perlman to add a vocal component to the Symphony. The choir was drawn mostly from area churches and rehearsed at Rodman Hall.  Helene remembers the first concert, Bach's Christ Lag in Todesbanden, performed with the orchestra at Grace Mennonite Church on Good Friday 1963.  In those days the ladies made their own gowns and Helene remembers cutting out fabric for dresses on her ping pong table!

Helene sang with Chorus Niagara for 45 years and still continues her involvement as a volunteer usher at concerts.  Highlights of her years with the chorus include "anytime husband Bert sang the bass solos"!  The Earth Mass with Paul Halley stands out for her because the audience got so involved with the emotion of the work and were "standing and singing in the aisles"  Other favourite concerts were Bach's B Minor Mass and Mendelssohn's Elijah.

Martha Wiens, is probably the longest standing current member of Chorus Niagara, having joined about 1965.  She remembers the "simpler times" with no auditions and no fundraising!  One memorable time she had to fill in suddenly on the keyboard for the Hallelujah Chorus when someone became ill!

As far as we can ascertain, besides Helene Mathies, the only members of the original chorus still living in the area are Rose Bandy, Terry Poitier and John Hollierhock.  If anyone knows otherwise, we would love to hear from you!
ROBERT COOPER HONOURED WITH
QUEEN'S JUBILEE MEDAL

Bob's Jubilee Medal
Robert Cooper receives the Queen's Jubilee Medal
from astronaut Roberta Bondar
This year on the occasion of the Queen's 60th Jubilee, several distinguished Canadians are being presented with the Jubilee Medal.  Our own Robert Cooper was one of those most deserving recipients earlier this summer.  Here is his account of the event:

"On a recent and warm June evening Megan and I went to Roy Thomson Hall for a ceremony to receive the QEII Jubilee Medal. I was not alone. There were hundreds of recipients from all walks of life being feted for their contribution to their disciplines and personal causes. It was a logistical challenge! After a considerable queue outside, we snaked our way inside to an alphabetized table to pick up my name card. We were then directed to one of the 15 or so presenting areas where lovely flag-draped stations were set up and where I was photographed and presented with my medal from a prominent Canadian...I had the honour to receive mine from astronaut Roberta Bondar. This was followed by an onstage event with speeches, video presentations of her Majesty in Canada over the years of her reign, some musical offerings by Ben Heppner, Susan Aglukark and Gordon Lightfoot among others, and then we all headed out to the Lobby for a massive reception. What fun to see old friends like John Barron, Gerald Fagan, Jean Ashworth Bartle, Walter Pitman ...and many more all being acknowledged for their significant achievements. It was humbling ...and an enormous honour for this monarchist!"

NEW DIRECTOR FOR CHILDREN'S CHOIR
Amanda Nelli
Chorus Niagara welcomes Amanda Nelli to our Choral Family.

For three years the Chorus Niagara Children's Choir has grown and flourished under the capable leadership of Melanie Marlin.  When Ms Marlin accepted a full time teaching position last spring, the search for her replacement began.  We are delighted to announce that Amanda Nelli has been selected and has begun to prepare the children for their new season.

An experienced Elementary Music Specialist, Ms. Nelli brings an outstanding array of experience to her new role as Artistic Director.  Currently music teacher at Fern Hill Private School in Oakville, Ms Nelli directs a variety of youth choirs at the school and has produced and directed a number of staged musicals. She is also responsible for the design and implementation of the music program for Elementary aged students.

A graduate of the Master of Arts in Music Education program at the University of Toronto and holding an Honours Bachelor of Music from the University of Ottawa, and a Bachelor of Education from Queen's University, Ms Nelli has an extensive background in classical music and performance. About her new role, she says, "It is such a wonderful opportunity for me to take on the role of Artistic Director for the Chorus Niagara Children's Choir. I am so excited to make music with the choristers - they have an outstanding reputation. I have always loved Niagara and all it has to offer."
