CANADIAN PREMIERE of NO MORTAL BUSINESS A HUGE SUCCESS
 | | Composer Allan Bevan in conversation with Robert Cooper at the pre-concert chat |
Imagine that you have spent the last four years of your life composing a dramatic work that includes chorus, soloists, narrator, and orchestra. You have written the parts for each, included detailed instructions and notes, but have never actually heard what you have composed. Imagine sitting with your family as the opening notes sound, as the narrator's voice rises above the orchestra and the chorus fills the cathedral with glorious sound at the opening performance of your work. Few people ever have that chance, but composer Allan Bevan experienced that feeling on March 3.
Here are a few reflections from Allan on that memorable weekend, addressed to our artistic director, Robert Cooper, who made it all happen...
"Your fine attention to detail is much appreciated, as it is through this that my intentions are made clear and the text takes on a special life and resonates in the consciousness. The sheer beauty of sound that you achieved is really remarkable. The diction was very impressive and anyone with half a brain could sense that the chorus loved the work and left nothing on the table in its performance. I really can't believe how much your choirs have improved since I last heard them in '07, and it isn't just a matter of being a larger group. It's much more than that and you have found that secret. They are a very professional bunch, and in my estimation anyway, better than most all symphonic choruses in the country that I've heard over the past few years. It is a credit to you that you have both choirs working together in what appears to be a seamless fashion, and they reminded me about just how much I love the sound of a big and capable chorus singing my music. I confess an addiction to what I heard this weekend and crave more!" Thank you Allan! We loved working with you, as well as with the Prologue, Geraint Wyn Davies and soprano Johane Ansell who were spectacular! |
