Dear ,

We hope you will join us again next week for something completely different as we delight you with the Topsy-Turvy World of Gilbert and Sullivan!  Our two shows will feature several excellent soloists as well as our Side-by-Side Chorale of talented local high school students.  The high-jinks will be ably stage-directed by Brock University's Virginia Reh under the baton of our own Robert Cooper.  We are pleased also that the talented musicians of the Niagara Symphony Orchestra will join forces with us for this concert.  It will indeed be a zany effervescent event, not to be missed!

Chorus Niagara thanks COGECO CABLE whose generous donation is making this concert possible.  We are also pleased to announce a partnership with Keefer Mansion who are presenting a special offer to all patrons of the G&S spectacular.  Wouldn't this make a great Mother's Day gift?  See details later in this letter.

Choristers Bring Aid to Dominican Republic and Haiti

Choristers Sean Foley, Hugh Gayler, Jo and Bob Henderson and Roy Lampard were among a group of St. Thomas's Church parishioners who recently returned from a Humanitarian Mission to the Dominican Republic.

The focus of the visit was to assist in a 9th. village building programme for Haitian migrants, organized by the Samaritan Foundation.  When completed, the village will have homes for 100 families, a school, a clinic and a church.

They worked at various jobs, hauling earth and cement, cutting re-bar, painting and leveling trenches for the school's foundation, which was poured as they left.

The group had raised the $7,000 needed to pay for 2 homes, and took part in a simple ceremony and blessing with the families selected to move into them. The government of the Dominican Republic then requires that the shacks in which they have been living are torn down.

The itinerary also included being involved with 3 village feeding programmes, which can only happen when a volunteer group finances them and is willing to work.  One mid- afternoon programme provided juice, a sandwich, a hard boiled egg and an orange, to about 145 children. Each child was also given a toy.

Another day, they dished up lunch, rice, beans and spaghetti in a tomato sauce and a glass of water, serving it to 25 seniors and 150 children. The washing -up followed!

Through the auspices of the St. Catharine's based Not Just Tourists organization, they were able to take $50,000 (350lbs.) worth of medical supplies for distribution to 3 village clinics.    A specific amount of this aid was designated to be taken into Haiti by a doctor leaving to spend time there treating earthquake victims.

This is a fine example of the energy and dedication shown by Chorus Niagara choristers outside of their musical lives!

Funding in Place for New Arts Centre

Chorus Niagara was thrilled to hear the announcement last month by MPP Jim Bradley that funding to Brock University has been approved for the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.  This, along with funding to the City of St. Catharines from both the federal and provincial governments is the last piece of the puzzle which will allow work to get under way for the new Performing Arts Centre in downtown St. Catharines.  The Centre will include an 800 seat Concert Hall which will become the long awaited new home of Chorus Niagara.  Patrons will benefit from enhanced acoustics as well as more comfortable seating and amenities.

Chorus Niagara is an enthusiastic supporter of the new Niagara Centre for the Arts in downtown St. Catharines.  We welcome the commitment of the City of St. Catharines and Brock University to this initiative.

"I love the music and how many different styles we sing!"
