Blue Shield announced their premium rate increase for March 2012
After 14 months of rate stability, Blue Shield announced for March 2012 a 9.5% rate increase for Southern California PPO policy plans. The rate increases vary from plan to plan and also depending on the age of the policyholders. The rates will jump significantly for young families, whereas premiums of "older aged" policy holders will increase only slightly.
UCLA and Blue Shield discontinue their negotiations Since January 1st, Blue Shield policy holders for PPO and HMO plans are unable to access UCLA and UCLA physicians. Hopefully both parties will start to renegotiate soon. - Read my blog for further details.
Anthem Blue Cross announces changes for 2012
Anthem Blue Cross discontinued the 12 months rate guarantees for new applicants. Instead, it will follow Blue Shield, which began in 2011, offering only a 6 months rate guarantee for new applicants. However, Cigna and Aetna still offer a 12 months rate guarantee for 2012. Anthem is also discontinuing its short term health insurance program.
