Welcome to the First Edition of treeTalkSM AM News

I am pleased to introduce our first edition of treeTalk AM News, HMI's Newsletter published for our Authorized Members. While we are in frequent contact with many of you as work is requested by our clients, we also wanted to provide our Members a quarterly newsletter addressing various topics that we feel will be of interest to you, including an update on new HMI programs and initiatives. Each edition will feature a Message from the President and I have decided to use this inaugural edition of treeTalk AM News to share HMI's vision for the professional tree care industry and our role. If you have any comments about treeTalk AM News please feel free to contact me at dcowles@HMIadvantage.com or (919) 460-5445 ext. 23.

Message from the President

Tree care requires a tremendous amount of training and experience and is one of the most dangerous professions in the nation. Unfortunately, the importance of using a quality company is marginalized by property owners, property managers and other consumers of tree care services. HMI believes two primary factors have contributed to this circumstance. First is a simple lack of understanding of the effort and investment that is required to perform expert tree care work. Most people do not have the experience or knowledge to understand what constitutes a professional tree care company nor can they generally evaluate the quality of work (until it is oftentimes too late). Second is the proliferation of the "pick-up truck and chainsaw" companies in the market that tend to underbid during normal conditions and price-gouge during emergencies - neither scenario promotes a positive or professional image to the consumer. [Read more...]
How to Get Paid by Insurance Companies when Doing Storm Work

Storm work can be very lucrative but it also has many risks, among them is ensuring that you get paid. Documenting your work is an important factor in diminishing the risk of non-payment. It not only facilitates working with adjusters and insurance companies, but it is valuable if there is any legal action required on your part in order to collect payment. [Read more...]

What Have We Done for Our Members Lately?

HMI's business model is simple: When our members are successful then HMI is successful. The following are some highlights of HMI's recent accomplishments that will benefit our network:
  • In the recent winter storms in the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic, HMI received over 500 leads for our network.
  • HMI has created national programs with over 15 insurance companies for emergency tree work and arboricultural consultative services.
  • Two leading insurers in the high net worth residential market (Chubb Insurance and ACE Risk Services) are using HMI members to do pre-loss inspections and plant health work on their clients' properties.

Frequenty Asked Questions
FAQs

Why do I need to comply with HMI's insurance requirements in order to receive work?

There are two reasons to comply with the insurance requirements: First, proper insurance coverage protects your company, employees and HMI. Second, most of HMI's customers require that their vendors have sufficient coverage.

How does HMI market the services of its Members to its clients?

HMI markets its network as a whole to its customers. Having a national network of quality tree care companies allows HMI to secure work from national insurers. HMI spends most of our marketing budget promoting our AM network.

What kind of referral activity should an HMI Member expect?

This depends on several factors such as the weather and where our clients do business. Some members may not get work for months and then receive multiple assignments due to a storm or other loss event.

When a Member receives an assignment from HMI who "owns" the client?

If HMI refers the work to you (as opposed to being the client) then, you own the client and you should sell your services and work as you would with any other customer. It is our hope that the referred client becomes a long term customer for you.

When do Members get paid for work assigned by HMI?

If HMI hires you directly then you will be paid upon completion of the work. When a property owner hires you directly it may take 2-4 weeks to get paid by the insurance company as the claim is processed.
