Al Vance
Long time Habitat supporter and volunteer Al Vance passed away in May at the age of 87. Right up until the end Al was out on the worksite teaching and mentoring volunteers as they built homes in the neighborhood named in his honor. Al came to Habitat in 1994; board member Ed Brauner remembers standing at what would become Samaritan Court asking if we could take on such a large project. Al's answer, "sure we can." "That was his answer before we started every project," remembered Ed. "I know that a little bit of Al lives on in nearly 60 sturdy homes...and over 150 children living in these homes will grow up smarter and straighter and accomplish more in their lives because of Al." Thank You for everything Al,
you will be sorely missed. |

About Us
Willamette West Habitat for Humanity incorporated on October 12, 1988 as the 350th U.S. affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. By late 1990, our territory included west Portland, and the affiliate consisted entirely of volunteers, occupying a small rented office in Multnomah. We owned a steeply sloping lot in SW Portland, and had a set of house plans.
Today Willamette West has four paid staff members, a very active 17-member board of directors, and a dozen specialized committees ranging from site development to family selection, family partnering, and faith relations.
With your help we have completed 60 homes (45 since 2000) and you have helped 89 adults and 165 kids escape the circle of poverty and achieve a better life.

Build a Home Frame a Future:
$149,150.00 Raised So Far!
In a heartwarming show of support, 475 of you attended the 3rd annual Build a Home Frame a Future breakfast at Embassy Suites in May, AND donated a record-breaking $149,000!
Thanks to the generosity of First Tech Credit Union, who was the title sponsor for the 3rd consecutive year, supporting sponsors Wells Fargo, West Coat Bank and Thrivent Financial, and dozens of corporate sponsors and table hosts, the event was entirely underwritten. One hundred percent of the donations received will go toward building simple, decent, affordable homes in Washington County.
Future homeowner Vunnara Thong told of how at age 22, while studying to become a doctor, the Khmer Rogue overthrew the Cambodian government and she was forced to work in the rice fields. Later she spent months in a refugee camp on the boarder of Thailand and suffered a head injury when a bomb exploded near her. In 1980, she was brought to United States, and eventually became an American citizen. Said Vunnara: "As a single parent in poor health, I could not afford to buy a house and I had lost hope. Now I feel blessed. Habitat for Humanity will be our stable house which we can call 'our sweet home'. I believe my daughter will be doing better at school and will have a bright future."
Thanks to all of you who help these families purchase their own 'sweet home'.

Executives Build (er...paint)
Fifteen top-level executives from the westside met up at Vance Place this week to do some painting. The Executive Build day was co-hosted by Wells Fargo Regional President Don Pearson (pictured below left in white) and Washington County Commissioner Dick Schouten. The final four houses at Vance Place are nearing completion so the group spread out to paint interior walls. Sarah Crooke from Perkins Coie (pictured below left), crawled up into a storage space to put on the base coat. "It's a good thing I didn't go to the gym today, this is a much better workout" she joked as she painted the ceiling overhead. |
