About Us

Willamette West Habitat for Humanity incorporated on October 12, 1988 as the 350th U.S. affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. By late 1990, our territory included west Portland, and the affiliate consisted entirely of volunteers, occupying a small rented office in Multnomah. We owned a steeply sloping lot in SW Portland, and had a set of house plans.

Today Willamette West has four paid staff members, a very active 17-member board of directors, and a dozen specialized committees ranging from site development to family selection, family partnering, and faith relations.Equal Opportunity Housing logo

With your help we have completed 55 homes (40 since 2000) and you have helped 89 adults and 165 kids escape the circle of poverty and achieve a better life.

Greetings!

Piti Ton and Tina Truong receive the keys to their new Habitat home.A Special Kind of Joy!

The season of Joy approaches and we can't let it arrive without spreading some joy ourselves.  Because of your involvement this year, four families are spending the upcoming holiday season in their own homes.  Free of mold, and drafts and over-crowding.

Here is what Piti and Tina had to say:  "We did it!  Last night [after signing their mortgage papers], Tina and I cannot sleep all night.  We talked about building house, having fun with house's builders, with volunteers, with other families that we worked with.  Last night, first time the kids saw the house, they were so happy.  They laughed, talked, and so excited.  They want to move in right away.  You can image, and see how much happy in their face, how they act, talk, and big smile in their face.  ...I can not describe how we feel, how we are happy.  I want to say THANKS! to all of you, Supporters, Volunteers, Donors, and BIG THANKS! TO HABITAT.  Thank You!"

That's what it's all about, and we can't thank you enough for your volunteer time and donations.  It is because of the generosity of people like you that these families, these children, will go to sleep tonight under their own roof and know the school they attend, and the friends they have today will be the same a year from now.  Talk about sweet dreams.

Brauner Award Recepients

The Brauner Award was established in 2006 and is named after its first recipients Ed and Ellen Brauner.  Bill Huntting (L) and Al Vance (R) receive the 2009 Brauner awardThe award is given annually to a volunteer - or in this case, volunteer's - who communicates the spirit of Habitat with leadership, kindness, humility, wisdom and sustained dedication.

Bill Huntting (left) and Al Vance (right) received the award this year.

Our current neighborhood, Vance Place, is named in honor of Al Vance, who has been involved with Willamette West Habitat since the beginning, and has worked on every house we've built.  Al also spends his time teaching our volunteers how to accomplish the tasks placed before them.

Bill Huntting joined the Habitat family after retiring.  He can always be found on the job site, is our resident architect, responsible for all the design work of our homes, and has sponsored several homes personally.  An upcoming project in Beaverton is named Huntting Place in honor of Bill & Becky Huntting and his sister Pat.

Congratulations Bill and Al, the award is well deserved!
