The newest addition to Shelburne Falls bourgeoning art scene, Grow Gallery at 55 Bridge Street is holding its grand opening exhibit, Into the Light, starting May 1st. Into the Light will feature the work of internationally acclaimed local glass artist, Jonathan Winfisky. A native of Massachusetts, Winfisky's glass sculptures have been shown in art galleries, museums, and private collections worldwide.
Grow Gallery is the vision of Jonathan Winfisky's wife, Lesley Anne Grow-Winfisky. Lesley worked at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute for the past four years as their Events Coordinator, and is a classically trained painter who has had more than a decade of gallery management experience. Grow Gallery is the realization of her lifelong dream to bring a highly curated fine arts gallery to Western Massachusetts. Grow Gallery will be an immersive art experience that grabs the customer's senses from the minute they walk in the door, encouraging the visitor to focus on the art as a reflection of both beauty and functionality.
Grow Gallery will have the exclusive rights to several internationally recognized artists from the Shelburne Falls Area, including woodworker - Spencer Peterman, fiber artist - Cynthia James, and leatherworkers - Tom Haywood and Andrea Santos. Grow Gallery will also be showcasing the work of ceramic artist -Tom White, jewelry artists - Cassie Gray, Jeff Kontoff, Rachel Feuer-Beck, and Laura Marie, photographer - Valerie Love, and glass artist - Josh Simpson among others. Rotating exhibitions of 2-dimensional art will occur every four months. Ned Wagers Dibble, and Frederick Burrington are the featured local painters who will be exhibiting their works through August.
Infusing her own sense of style on the gallery, Lesley has created an atmosphere from the space at 55 Bridge Street that will serve both the discerning collector, as well as offer a unique view on the gift and wedding market. Because of its vibrant community of local artists, as well as a strong interest in contemporary art throughout the Berkshires, Shelburne Falls serves as the perfect backdrop for this distinctive collection.
Jonathan Winfisky has been designing and producing unique, original blown and cast sculptural glass vessel forms for over thirty years. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in sculpture. His work has been featured in The Corning Museum of Glass, The Corning New Glass Review, The "Art's In The Embassy" Worldwide Exhibit, The Wheaton Museum of Glass, and is shown in over 300 galleries worldwide, as well as in public and private collections. Each piece is a signed and dated original work of art glass created locally in Winfisky's studio, a renovated 100-year-old barn in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.
Into the Light will feature Winfisky's Sculptural Design and Shell Bowl Series. Describing his work for this exhibit, Winfisky explained, "Glass is the essential material which gathers, focuses, reflects, refracts, amplifies, filters, and transmits light. I use its special light-altering abilities to create a kind of optical poetry, music to the eyes. My work is about groupings of objects - forms in a series all designed to work collectively in relation to each other, with an underlying element that carries a theme throughout. The individual piece is important in and of itself, but it is the interrelationship of these design elements and how they translate into different forms, which interests me in my work."
