CKCA Newsletter
Vol. 1, Issue 7
February 2010
Welcome to the Crown King Community Association (CKCA) and our e-Newsletter

The Crown King Community Association Newsletter is intended to inform those within as well as outside the Crown King Community on past, current, & upcoming issues, activities, and events.

Its contents are more of a community effort than an editorial effort: The newsletter is only as good as the articles contributed, so we highly encourage your input by the 15th of the month.

Throughout this e-newsletter, you can click on photos, events, or issues to be re-directed to other websites for more information.

You can also print this email, forward it to a friend, or view the web version through the link at the top.

We will also post all the newsletters in print version at the General Store and you can access all past archived issues here.

It is imperative to make sure we have your correct email information.

How to do this: If you change your email or want to use/add a different one please contact Peg or use the "update profile/email address" link at the bottom of every email.

Lastly, if you do not want to receive our e-newsletters you can easily remove yourself by using the "SafeUnsubscribe" link at the bottom of every email - no need to contact us for that!
What has the CKCA and
Crown King been up to?

  • The Crown King Community Association board urges all residents and property owners to attend the quarterly meeting at 10:00 on February 20, 2010 at the school.

  • The CKCA board recently met to discuss current and upcoming issues and events that will affect us in the coming year, and to plan for what will be discussed at the Feb 20 quarterly meeting. We will also recap on what the CKCA accomplished in 2009.

  • Also look for a survey from the Crown King Community Association in your inbox soon! The purpose of the survey is to gather data from all property owners and all permanent residents of the Crown King Community.

We need the data so we can have a record of what issues or concerns exist in our community. After the survey we will categorize the responses and have them
vote and rate the issue on importance. The data at this point can be used to meet with County, State or Forest Service departments.
Upcoming Events
  • Good news! The businesses, associations of Crown King have come together to create the 2010 Event Calendar. This calendar is for the entire community! In fact, it is our goal this year to ensure that all businesses and associations work in sync to make each event a success! Please contact us if there is a community event that needs to be added to the webpage. You can access the calendar here
  • Great new events this year to attend:

    • CK Prom! A real prom for all ages. This years' Theme: "White sport coat and a pink carnation".
    • CKCA Oktoberfest.
    • Sunday School at the Crown King Community Church. Welcome to all children! Drop kids off for an hour of singing, crafts, and bible lessons.
    • Youth Group meets on Saturdays. Contact Darla for more details at 928.632.5564

    Past Events

Another storm! This one included boulders in the road, a landslide, and ruts galore. Thankfully, our CK Road Maintenance Association has been working hard to get everything back in order. They are in contact with the county and all proper avenues to make sure your drive up is safe. Road to Horsethief and Senator Highway to Prescott considered dangerous and 4x4 highly recommended. For more photo and weather updates, see CK facebook page.

Other Issues
  • Destination Polaris: On Saturday and Sunday, January 16th and 17th, a film crew was in Crown King taking shots of the town and interviewing residents and business owners.  They also were looking over some of our roads and trails. Their film will be aired on the Outdoor Channel in March and other times throughout the year.

  • APS: Currently there is a multitude of issues regarding APS such as Cable lines, Billing, and the Future of our APS usage in Crown King. Meara has put together an APS Information page to help explain and detail these issues. It is available here at the Crown King Community Association website.
There is also an open discussion on the Crown King Facebook Page.

We strongly urge you to call APS regarding billing issues, and power outages that pertain to your property. For this, APS needs those calls to come in individually. For all other questions, information and opinions, please direct them to the Crown King Community Association (via email or facebook discussion page) so we can address them at the February meeting. We are attempting to have an APS representative at this meeting if possible.
  • Roads: Please read updates and Road Wars issues that are included in the newsletter

  • Monitoring the grading on the main road coming into Crown King. The Community Association has been attempting to improve monitoring of what work is actually being done on our main road into Crown King. Read the article here

A Bit of Crown King History

This month - What Exactly is a Switchback?

(Excerpts from Phillip Varney's Arizona Ghost Towns and Mining Camps)

"Traversing Murphy's Impossible Railroad is not impossible at all. The dirt road heading southwest from Cleator is the roadbed of the old Bradshaw Mountain Railroad. Evidence of this are backfilled dips, gentle curves, and deep cuts made in the rock, traits that are roadbed requirements for trains, not automobiles.- - - After climbing gently, the roadbed becomes a series of very steep switchbacks.
