Welcome to the Crown King Community Association (CKCA) and our e-Newsletter

The Crown King Community Association Newsletter is intended to inform those within as well as outside the Crown King Community on past, current, & upcoming issues, activities, and events.

Its contents are more of a community effort than an editorial effort: The newsletter is only as good as the articles contributed, so we highly encourage your input by the 15th of the month.

Throughout this e-newsletter, you can click on photos, events, or issues to be re-directed to other websites for more information.

You can also print this email, forward it to a friend, or view the web version through the link at the top.

We will also post all the newsletters in print version at the General Store and you can access all past archived issues here.

It is imperative to make sure we have your correct email information.

How to do this: If you change your email or want to use/add a different one please contact Peg or use the "update profile/email address" link at the bottom of every email.

Lastly, if you do not want to receive our e-newsletters you can easily remove yourself by using the "SafeUnsubscribe" link at the bottom of every email - no need to contact us for that!

AmeriCorps NCCC continues to support local wildfire prevention efforts

CROWN KING, Ariz. - On Monday, November 16, a team of 15 AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members arrived in Crown King, Ariz. to begin a four-week project supporting the Crown King Fire Department (CKFD).  This team, the 18th to work with CKFD since 2004, will be in town through December 15.

After a rocky start on Blue Bell Road, the team immediately began fire management training. Their work will focus on fuels reduction and creating a defensible space for community members.  The team's goals include chipping and clearing at least 10 acres of brush.

The Crown King Fire Department (CKFD) is dedicated to saving lives and protecting the property of all residents and visitors to the community. CKFD responds to emergency calls, including medical, structural, and wild land fire.

The AmeriCorps NCCC team, composed of members from across the United States, is really excited to support the mission of CKFD.  They began their term of service with NCCC in mid-October and, after receiving a month of training, are happy to be starting their first project of the year. They look forward to meeting community members and learning more about Crown King.

Crown King Road Maintenance Association

  • Our next meeting is at the school at 1pm on December 5th.

Crown King Chamber of Commerce
  • A very important event planning meeting will be held Mon Dec 7th at the Mill. A representative from each business, association, the fire dept., and the churches, are all strongly encouraged to attend to create the 2010 event calendar.

Crown King's First  Town
Christmas Light Display

Note: When you cross the Magic Bridge, you will be asked to change your radio station to coincide with the light show in town.

This weekend marked the beginning of a new tradition in Crown King! The CK Chamber of Commerce and local residents are proud to announced a fabulous Crown King Christmas Light Extravaganza!

Many thanks go out to Herb Shepard, the mastermind and coordinator of this event. Herb and his helpers have installed a 40 foot tall tree on the property directly across the street from The Crown King General Store at Burke's Railroad Park.

Herb and his volunteers are working hard to complete the nearly 75,000 LED light display. Our Christmas light display will rival those at malls and resorts. It will be complete with music and maybe even some 'real' snow!!

We hope you will find time during the holidays to visit Crown King and enjoy our town display. Crown King is truly a unique place, and our Christmas Light Extravaganza will make it even more special!!!

Thanks to Tommy and Bill Burke for allowing us to use their property for this town event. Many thanks, too, go out to all the folks who worked tirelessly to make this a success.

The Crown King Christmas Light Extravaganza will run from Thanksgiving Weekend through Jan 3rd.

A Bit of Crown King History - The Crown King School
From Peg Martin

The first known teacher in Crown King was Essie Nelson (Tony Nelson's grandmother) beginning in 1894.  She held classes in the bunkhouse located at the Crown King mine. The next known teacher was Virgie Hite, who taught from 1901 to 1906, possibly in the Union Community Hall located at the present site of Cedar Roost.  The next known teacher was Edna Shoe in 1915 followed by Helen Harrington (Tony's great aunt) in 1916.

The present schoolhouse was built in 1916 and opened in 1917 with Alice Martin instructing the first classes.  Monies for the new school came from the Santa Fe Railroad, the Bradshaw Reduction Co., Nelson Mining and others, with lumber milled at Minnehaha Flats.  The present structure has held as few as 1, and as many as 32 students throughout the years.

The second classroom and library were added in 1987, and the mural on the side of the school was done in 1998 through the Art in Residence program.

Hats off to our present teacher, Cheryl Franklin, for taking such good care of our present 6 students.
