You can help us build this into a valuable communication tool by helping us build the newsletter content - more on this below, but suffice it to say that we want your help with articles! You can print this email, forward it to a friend, or view the web version through the link at the top. We will also post all the newsletters in print version at the General Store and we will have an easily accessible online archive for past issues.
It
is imperative to make sure we have your
correct email information. How to do this: If you change your email or want to use/add a different one please contact Peg or use the "update profile/email address" link at the bottom of every email. Lastly, if you do not want to receive our e-newsletters you can easily remove yourself by using the "SafeUnsubscribe" link at the bottom of every email - no need to contact us for that!

town even better! Please check out the article below for more info and their website.
- Photo Contest: The Rattlesnake won.
- Pony Express: You can see the photos on our Facebook page which you can easily get to through the link in the article below.
The
Pony Express came blazing into town July 2nd to pickup the mail, have a
refreshment, get some nourishment, and back in the saddle on the arduous
task of delivering the mail. They are dedicated to raising funds for
their favorite charity and to have some fun along the way. We were very
excited to see them arrive and wished them a fond adieu when they left.
- Mining Days a Success: It seems everyone had a great time. We raised
$75-$80 for the community Association from the Gold Pan
Booth. The Gold Nugget Raffle raised around $700 for our new
Chamber of Commerce and the ongoing Benchmade Knife Raffle is off and
running. We have raised around
$70 already at the Prospector for our Community Association! It
looks like we could do real well here by the time we reach the Apple
festival.
- Cabin Crawl: Cabin Crawl: The
1st Annual Summer Cabin Crawl was a success! Participants mentioned
they enjoyed the early afternoon hours of the event which providing enough
daylight to see the views from each cabin. We had a sign-up of 6 hosted
cabins, so thank you to those who took the time (& money) to host a lovely evening for the locals!

Due to rains in late June and early July the fire

Storyteller Section:
Here is an example from
Meara to inspire the writer or storyteller in you:
My Story, by Meara Perrin:
My parents (Jim and Connie McHugh) purchased a lot with
a foundation on it in Crown King in 1984. They slowly built the cabin
together. By the time I was five, I was already coming up to Crown King every
weekend. Most that know me would never guess that a large portion of my life was
spent with no electricity or plumbing!
Our closest neighbors were Hubert and
Eileen Stratton, and Walking Sam. They all died in accidents by the time I was around
14. At the same time my parents received news that my grandmother back East in Toledo, OH had her second round of colon cancer. So they sold the cabin (one of their biggest regrets to this day), and we moved to
Traverse City, MI where I went to high school.
The photo above is my sister Manda and I on the last day we where at our cabin.
I decided
almost immediately that Michigan was a great
place to visit, not to live, so as soon as I turned 18 I saved up and by 19
moved back to Arizona, where I met Dave (literally the day I
moved here).
I soon talked him into bringing me back up to the place that gave
me the best childhood a girl could have, and he was also hooked.
From there, we
introduced my stepdaughters Brooke and Haley and "Bear-Creeked it" as we like to
say for ten years before we could save up enough for a cabin. I'm sure the
Colemans suffered a loss that year - which on a side note my parents were also
friends with the Colemans, who not only neighbored us in CK, but also lived on
Waltann
Lane in Phoenix a few doors down!
In 2007, we finally
bought the Davidson's cabin on a handshake deal.
In 2008, I created the Lane 2
Fire site to help with communications between the townspeople and raise money
and awareness about the fire to help the town out as much as I could, following
that with a clothing donation benefit.
Mostly, we simply hope to pass on the
tradition of a great childhood in Crown King to all 4 of our girls. We are so
passionate about this town, but even more so about the people in
it!

Contributed by Meara Perrin:
Berries are almost ready! The blackberries are getting
close. We love to hop around and watch our kids get all scratched up picking
berries. Any takers?
Also - in a couple weeks we will be making the rounds to
pick Prickly Pear Berries. I make the juice every year at home, but would like
to also do so in Crown King - maybe we could market this at the two stores in
town? So let me know if you want to join me! This is a kids favorite! Health
wise; good source of antioxidants & fiber!
So here's a recipe that people
love:
1 lb shrimp - not
cooked but thawed
A few small Chicken Breast strips (like the frozen ones
from the Costco bags)
2 tablespoons Olive Oil
2 cloves garlic - chopped
Random herbs - must be fresh, chopped (I have plenty for
transplanting if you like)
Salt and Pepper
Silver Tequila - 1 shot
1/2 Cup Prickly Pear Juice(never storebought - that
stuff is brown and awful - should be Hot Pink in
color)
Place all in ziplock (or two to prevent cross
contamination). Marinate in fridge for 1 hour.
Grill it, and place juice in small pan on high heat to
create a bubbly sauce to top the meat when done.
Serve with white rice and Margaritas. Serves two (or four
if you have little birdies like us).
