Resources for New Standards Development Activities

ASTM often receives requests for new standards development activities ranging from a single standard to a new technical committee. A new section of the ASTM Web site offers guidance for those who would like to initiate a request for a new standards activity, and includes relevant sections such as a list of information that is needed in order to make a request, ASTM's three-tiered process for creating new activity, and the resources ASTM has available for such requests. This new section will also include case studies from newer ASTM committees developed in the past 10 years such as Light Sport Aircraft and Property Management Systems. View the new activity pages here.
Customize Your ASTM Meeting Schedules
ASTM members now have the option of building their own custom meeting schedules on the Web. Menu choices allow members to identify their committee(s) of interest, target specific meetings, and create a printable file that contains a personal schedule of meeting names, dates, times and locations. Log in through the "My ASTM" section of the Web site and select the "Create My Schedule" tab under Additional Resources to start building your personal meeting schedules today.
ASTM Scholarships
ASTM is currently seeking student nominees for the 2010 ASTM International Graduate Scholarship and the 2010 Katharine and Bryant Mather Scholarship. The application deadline for both scholarships is April 30. Visit the Student Awards section in the Students & Professors section of the ASTM Web site for more information.
ASTM's Virtual Classroom
A total of eight one-hour online training workshops are available free of charge to all ASTM members. Visit the ASTM Web site for 2010 course schedules and to register.

MOU with Serbia
ASTM has signed an official memorandum of understanding with the Institute for Standardization of Serbia. The MOU program promotes communication between ASTM International and national standards bodies worldwide, fostering awareness of the standardization systems of all parties involved.  DID YOU KNOW? . . . Brain Injury Awareness
The Brain Injury Association of America has designated March Brain Injury Awareness Month as part of their yearlong, nationwide education campaign: "A concussion is a brain injury. Get the facts." According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 3.8 million concussions related to sports and recreational activities occur in the United States each year. Wearing a proper fitting helmet that conforms to ASTM safety standards is one of the best ways to prevent brain injuries. ASTM Subcommittee F08.53 on Headgear and Helmets has developed standards on helmets for a variety of sports and recreational activities, including football, ice skating, skateboarding, bicycling and roller skating, BMX cycling, pole vaulting, martial arts, bull riding and horseback riding. Visit the ASTM site for more information on helmet standards.
ASTM International is one of the world's largest management systems for the development of voluntary standards for materials, products, systems and services.

ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency.

ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions around the globe.
