Welcome to the Spring 2009 Beltane Ranch Newsletter!
Hello friends of Beltane,
Spring has sprung and we are writing to share photos from this bright beautiful season and to fill you in on some exciting new projects.
New Beltane Baby Chicks for Farm Fresh Eggs
Peep, Peep, Peep!
Our new fuzzy baby chicks!
We are happy to announce we will soon be serving Beltane farm fresh eggs every morning. Last month we welcomed the arrival of 48 peeping day-old baby chicks. This group of ladies are all heritage breed chickens including Barred Rock, Silver-Laced Wyandotte, Buff Orpington, Pearl Leghorns and Black Jersey Giants. When they first arrived they were kept warm and safe in an incubator but they have since moved to their new hen house overlooking the olive orchard. Once they are full grown they will be free to roam the orchard which benefits the ladies and the olives.  And don't worry: No Roosters!

The gardens and orchards are more lush and varied this year than ever. The house is surrounded by blooms of iris, tulips, camelias, Easter lilies, calendula, Icelandic poppies and daffodils and we are already serving home grown asparagus, broccolini, spring onions, swiss chard, spinach, lemons and oranges from the garden. The driveway is lined with California poppies, while bright yellow mustard and lupine blossoms mark every row of the vineyard. Raspberries will be ready to pick in about a month- which go in to our famous Raspberry Syrup, as featured in Food & Wine Magazine.

Bed and Breakfast

The Bed and Breakfast was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle as the place to stay when visiting Kenwood. We commissioned a beautiful new painting of the historic hillsides of the higher altitudes of the original Beltane property; its now hanging above the wood stove in the living room. The tennis court has been entirely renovated including the backboard and basketball hoop.

Grass fed Cattle Grazing in Sonoma Valley pasturesSonoma Valley Grass Fed Beef
Beltane Ranch has partnered with Castagnasso Farms in a local Sonoma Valley grass fed beef project. The cattle are free range and are never fed any hormones or antibiotics. Rotational grazing between the ranches benefits both the cattle and the land.

Vineyards and Olive orchards are looking good but late spring weather is critical for the bloom and set. The Chardonnay vines budded out about 3 weeks ago (a single Chardonnay grape bunch bud pictured at right) and our Sauvignon Blanc buds are just about to push out. Zinfandel, Syrah, Alicante and Carignane vines will be budding very soon as well.
Last year was light for the olive trees so this year should prove to be a full crop. The trees will have a thorough pruning in May, and the weather will determine the crop, which we typically harvest in late November.
Our wine grapes are featured in the 2007 Sauvignon Blanc available  to taste and buy at Cakebread Winery
as well as the 2007 Chardonnay at our neighboring winery Kunde. Our award-winning olive oil is available in the kitchen and at The Olive Press in Sonoma.
