"People are not broken and in need of fixing... most  people are just fine.  They may simply need a tune-up."
                                                Dr. Alexander R. Lees

In This Issue:

This month everyone is offering some kind of "self-help" information but not in a form you may be quite so familiar with.  As long time readers of Reflections know, we like to share new and different ideas, or a different angle or take, on something we may already know about.  For example:
  • Did you know that we have an emotional brain and a thinking brain?  And, that EFT works on one, and NLP on the other.  Alex explains why it's an excellent idea to include NLP training in your therapist's toolbox and learn how to help both parts of your brain.  Sounds like a good idea to have your whole brain functioning at its best, doesn't it? :-)
  • Dave shares a personal experience about discovering a new gadget that has helped his wife tremendously.  If reading Dave's article helps just one other person, we'll be delighted!
  • Susan writes about acupuncture and does so with great reverence and awe.  Suddenly, having a bunch of needles stuck all over my body sounds like the perfect thing to do, especially if I want to get my energy dancing.
  • Tom is a man on a mission to help people, especially those with allergies or sensitivities.  He explains in detail how we can test ourselves to discover which contaminants, pollutants, or foods are affecting us negatively.  Again, if this info helps just one person... :-)
  • Berit's Corner -- I'm excited about the date Feb. 12th when the world will discover red mittens, Three Beavers and my hometown -- the wonderful city of Vancouver.
Enjoy!

Two Brains Plus EFT and NLP
By Dr. Alexander R. Lees

I took my first training in NLP in 1982.  Although I had previous academic training, and also completed my doctorate in the early 1990s, NLP has proven itself to be the most beneficial and practical set of tools in my therapist's toolbox. The next input of any significance (to me) was learning about the Tapping (EFT, meridian tapping, energy tapping, et al) technique in 1999.  The Tapping technique (under various names, including EFT) is superb when used properly of course, in deleting an unwanted emotional response to some situation, event, or circumstance.  In NLP terms, the tapping is the ultimate anchor collapse (NLPers will know what this means).

What got me thinking about NLP recently was a number of clients and participants at our EFT workshops have asked us why we're not teaching NLP anymore?  They've also asked, "How does NLP differ from EFT?" and "Do I need both, and if so, why?"

Interesting questions.  To begin with, much of the promotion and marketing that accompanies various ads offering EFT training suggests it's a stand alone therapy.  This is akin to saying because someone has learned to replace a sparkplug in a sophisticated machine like a car, they are now a mechanic.  In my opinion, to get the most benefit from using EFT in a therapeutic context, especially if you're helping others, is to also have some training in a subject like NLP, or Behavioural Science, psychology, hypnotherapy, counselling and so on.

For example, let's jump into Behavioural Science 101 for both clarification and further understanding of the essential difference.

To put it simply, it's as if we have two brains in our heads.  The older brain is referred to as the limbic system.  This is the seat of emotions and memory.  It's also useful to know that within the limbic system another little "box" resides - the amygdala.  This box is responsible for the flight or fight response, as well as being an important player in the formation of memories.

The second and newer brain is call the prefrontal cortex.  This is the seat of reason, planning, and abstract thought.  It is also the place where logic and language skills reside.  Another name for it is the thinking brain.

Normally, the thinking brain is in charge, and acts as a governor for the older limbic system.  Certain ways of thinking, however, can trigger a strong emotive reaction, which can become a memory of some situation or event that can trigger a large negative emotional response in the future.

"Okay, let's tap it out," you say.  Great!  However, quite often, the same thinking process that led to the unwanted emotional response in the first place can once again generate an unwanted emotional outburst or response, and it may concern a totally different event than the one you tapped on.

The point is that unless you know something about the cognitive processes, it's conceivable you could "tap out" an unwanted emotion or problem, only to find it can manifest in some other form.

Enter NPL.  NLP is about the thinking processes and how to adjust them.  Combine the tapping and NLP, and you are definitely acquiring enough knowledge to be able to really help yourself or others to live a happier, healthier life, with much more joy, confidence and enthusiasm.

As I was writing this, I was vaguely aware that Berit was now peering over my shoulder, reading what I'd written so far. Obviously, something had pressed her "I'm excited!" button, and she interrupted my focus with "It's about time!"  With my few remaining grey cells, I looked up and with the greatest of wit said, "Huh?"  I guess the perplexed look on my face told her she had interrupted my train of thought, and I must have validated her assumption by asking her "Time for what?"

She smiled that smile of hers and said, "Why, to do more NLP workshops, of course."  She then quickly added, "You're so brilliant!"  Which of course was all it took - the trap was properly baited after all, and I readily agreed.

So, in a few weeks time, we will be teaching NLP again and I'm looking forward to it because when you teach something you're passionate about, you have a lot of fun!  Why not consider joining us and expand your knowledge of how to help yourself and/or others by learning NLP.  I guarantee you'll be glad you did.

NLP Workshops Back by Popular Demand!

Two advantages to learning NLP:
  • With NLP training you will enhance your practitioner skills in whatever profession you're in, and
  • You will also fine tune and improve your communication skills with friends, family and in business.
Three reasons why we will be doing NLP workshops:
  • Many people have asked us to.
  • Now that you know about the emotional brain and the thinking brain and that EFT works on one and NLP on the other, it's an excellent idea to add NLP training to your therapist's toolbox.
  • Having NLP skills really does improve communications in all areas of your life!
The #1 reason why we want to teach NLP - we love doing it!

Just another life changing breakthrough
By David Marshall

My family and I had a great Christmas and I hope you did too.  We spent Christmas with my daughter and her family in her new house.  She and her husband have designed and built this fantastic ecologically sound, hi-tech house.  It has been built to the highest government specification for sustainable housing, known as code six.  Very briefly and simply this means that everything about the house involves great efficiency.  Rain water is collected and used for all washing purposes.  There are solar collectors for heating water and generating electricity.  The insulation of the building is immense.  The construction of the building is supervised so that all waste is recycled and not just dumped, including the digging of the foundations.  The list goes on and on.  When you want to know the full details see this site

For us, the most significant thing was the ventilation system.  In this system the air in the house is changed every two hours.  Hot air from within the house is extracted and heats fresh air that is being drawn in to the system.  So what's new about that I hear you thinking!  Not a lot really.

Now let me tell you something about my wife, she has suffered severe sinusitis headaches for many years.  She has tried countless potions, pills, antibiotics, painkillers, stopped eating dairy products, has seen specialists, had scans and X rays, at vast expense and all to no avail. The most effective treatment so far was to breathe steam two to three times a day.

After being in this house for only one day, her headaches totally disappeared!  Amazing we thought, especially when the headaches did not come back at all.  After two or three days my wife mentioned this to our daughter and, in a matter of fact sort of way, she said, "That will be the air circulation system, they do say it is very good for people who are allergic to dust and other things."

To be free of headaches for two weeks was an absolute luxury for my wife, and the effectiveness of the fresh air system  seems to have been proved because when she left that house the headaches returned.  So I then started to think of how we could put one of these systems into our Spanish house because, as you probably know, Spain has a very dry and dusty climate. Of course, it was not practical to retrofit such a system into an existing house. So I searched the Internet and discovered that you can now get free standing  machines that purify the air and I started to research the market.  Then I discovered that you can buy a small portable  purifying device that is about the size of a matchbox  that you wear round your neck.  This device sends a stream of purified air in front of your face so that you are breathing purer air all the time.  It arrived yesterday.  We tore the packet apart, fitted the battery and she wore it all day and even in bed, asleep.  And this morning there was no headache!  I know this is a very limited experience but it has given us more hope than anything we have used in the past.

How does it work?

The Mini-mate generates an intense electrostatic ion wind that charges floating particles in the breathing zone.

Airborne bacterial and viral pathogens as well as allergens such as house dust or pollens are instantly repelled away from the wearer substantially creating a particle free exclusion zone in your own immediate breathing space.

Where will I benefit from using Mini-mate?

In the home, the garden, the office in fact just about anywhere. Because Mini-mate delivers a constant stream of purified air directly over your personal breathing space it can be especially beneficial in closed environments. Places where the air is being re-circulated, such as in commercial and military airplanes, trains, cinemas, waiting rooms, offices etc.  Transvirulent organisms produced by infected individuals can easily spread. The Mini-mate can be invaluable in this type of situation.

Mini-Mate is a cold incineration device which actually destroys the airborne contaminants. Different contaminants are neutralized and destroyed in different manners, depending on their chemical properties. It is not a filtration device, and no parts need to be replaced or serviced.  The technology is something called  corona discharge. Corona discharge technology has been used by the military, to destroy toxic biological and nerve agents in the field and in laboratories, and in industry manufacturing "clean rooms" for years. The same technological principles have only recently been miniaturized to allow for personal, portable use.

For those of you who suffer from sinusitis and allergies here are a few more details from the Mini-mate site

What's the catch?  Only that you need to use  rather expensive batteries, the sort used for flash cameras. The answer is to buy two rechargeables and a charger. They say a battery lasts for 50 hours and can be recharged a thousand times, so, in my book, that's well worth it!

Why, it's even been on Oprah!!

I hope our eager enthusiasm for this device will prove to be well founded, but, as with so many things today, you can only test it out yourself. Well worth a go if you are a sufferer and you can get a money back deal, like Amazon offers.

I'll let you know how we get on with it.

Acupuncture - Dancing with Your Energy
By Susan Stone

I didn't start out in life wanting to become an acupuncturist.  Like most acupuncturists it is our second or third career path.  My father was a Western medical general practitioner in a very small town 30 miles west of Boston, and my mother was a nurse.  I grew up surrounded by Western medical magazines, conversations and textbooks and  I wasn't particularly fond of needles (who is?).  So, in some ways it may seem surprising that I became an acupuncturist

My first encounter with an acupuncture needle was when I was in college and a friend gave me an acupuncture needle.  Just one. I didn't have any knowledge, but I had a chart of the acupuncture points of the body.  When I developed shin splints, I intuitively put it in my own leg at the point ST36.  The shin splints disappeared. I would clean the needle and reuse it on various points of my body to treat myself.  Reusing a needle is not a recommended practice, but what did I know, I was a kid, I was in college!  My second exposure to acupuncture was when I had a potentially life-threatening virus and in a few days it was healed by an acupuncturist using laser acupuncture.  That was truly amazing!

After college, I went to acupuncture school where we began needling ourselves fairly early on in our training.  The first point I needled was one that is known to be fairly powerful.  It was not a suggested point to acupuncture on yourself for the first time because of its power, but  I was feeling adventurous.  The point was LI-4 which is on the web of the thumb and is a very useful point for a lot of ailments.  It is one of the two points that comprise the four gates which helps to open up the qi of the whole body.  Even though I was feeling brave, I was simultaneously very nervous to put the needle into my body and my heart was racing (gone was the fearlessness of my college days).  I stuck the needle in just a little bit and to my surprise the needle as if under its own power sunk deep into my hand.  It was all I could do not to freak out.  I think the only thing that kept me sane was the deep amazement at this phenomena.  And then to top it off, I had a hard time pulling it out.  The muscle fibers in my thumb grasped the needle and wouldn't let go.  I had to have one of the teachers help me extract the needle!

I've also experienced the opposite phenomena.  When we learned ear acupuncture, we administered the detox ear acupuncture protocol on each other.  My body rejected these needles so violently that they flew out of my ear and landed on the other side of the room.  What an "Oh my God" moment!  I never underestimate the power of our own energy and the body's ability to know what is best for it.

Please don't let me freak you out with those stories, hopefully you're laughing.  I think  acupuncture is beautiful and a very graceful modality.  It fills me with wonder every day.  Experiencing the energy, the qi of every patient is magnificent.  I watch with amazement and I listen with awe as patients tell me what they experience as I insert the needles and feel their energies move.  The body will self-correct given the proper encouragement.  Acupuncture is a homoeostatic modality, it helps the body find homeostasis, balance.  For the most part, the needles aren't felt during insertion.  When a person does feel the insertion, it is a slight sensation, not painful.  If there is some slight pain, it is often because a larger blockage of energy was moved.  The discomfort subsides very quickly.  Qi is wondrous.  It moves where it is needed to help our body heal.

Acupuncture can also be very funny.  I was needling some heart points on a person that had a block in his heart energy.  As I was needling the points he started laughing (laughter came from his whole body) as if he had heard the funniest joke in the world.  The points I needled were on his back so I wasn't able to see his face and the outburst startled me, so I asked him if he was OK?.   Amidst the laughing he said, "I feel like I'm being tickled from the inside!"  Then I started laughing too.  After the treatment, I noticed a considerable change in his demeanor - he was so much happier.

An interesting note - no two acupuncture sessions are ever the same because your energies are never the same.  So, when you dance with the ever-changing energy, your dance will always be different.   Acupuncture can help your dance with life become more graceful and bountiful.

Next month I will describe an acupuncture session which will hopefully provide some useful information for you to consider trying acupuncture.  Then, you too, will have your energy dancing!

Energy Testing to Find Sensitivities
By Tom Dorzab

I said I wouldn't do it, but I lied. I said I had spent enough time talking about allergies and sensitivities, but here we go again. I'm sorry, I just can't help myself. I promise this will be my last article on the subject (at least until the sun rises again). It's such an important topic these days, I just had to slip one more in.

I don't know how many of you have tried the sensitivity protocol I've presented, but for those of you that have tried it or will try it, I would like to give you some ideas as to how to use it. There are some simple helpful hints that you can try that may have some profound effects on reducing or even eliminating your symptoms.

Energy tests (muscle tests) are a great way to discover sensitivities. I prefer to place the substance to be tested on the solar plexus of a client and test using the Spleen Meridian muscle test. I could probably spend many months worth of articles just explaining the last sentence, but for simplicity's sake, I'm going to let it ride for now (see the April 2008 edition of this newsletter for more details on energy testing). If you're familiar with energy testing, just use any test that works for you. While energy tests are not always 100% accurate, depending on the skill level of the practitioner, they can be very accurate. They also tend to be much more sensitive than conventional medical tests for sensitivities.

Most of us tend to have symptoms that have been with us for quite some time. After a while they become so much a part of our life and we get so used to them, that we don't even think of them as symptoms anymore. Since people are often not even aware that they have a sensitivity to a substance, making the connection between a substance sensitivity and one or more symptoms is usually impossible.

It's only after correcting our sensitivities that we notice changes. In my case, after correcting a sensitivity to vitamin C, I noticed a definite change in my breathing. It was almost like getting over a mild cold. The interesting thing is that I didn't even realize there was anything wrong with my breathing to start with. As is true in so many areas of our life, we don't notice it until it's gone.

OK, so let's get to some of those helpful hints I was telling you about. One of the easiest ways to get over a bunch of sensitivities without even testing is to simply place a very small quantity of every food or drink you put in your mouth on a piece of paper, fold it up, lay it on your solar plexus, and have someone correct for everything there. Of course you probably won't be sensitive to everything in the paper, but why take chances? Remember, if you know you are highly sensitive to a substance, I would recommend finding a qualified practitioner to help you through. You also need to review all my previous articles on sensitivities and allergies prior to beginning.

We are often bothered by airborne substances and don't know which of the thousands of possible offending substances is affecting us. You can also take the scatter gun approach to correcting these airborne substances. One easy way to collect the sample for correction is to place an open jar of distilled water outside or inside depending on your needs for about 24 hours. Then do the correction with the jar resting on the solar plexus. If you're in a hurry and don't want to wait 24 hours, you can take a damp paper towel,  wipe smooth surfaces with it and then place the paper towel on your solar plexus and correct.

Remember that air quality can change dramatically from one day to the next. Seasonal changes in pollen, mold, spores etc, industrial changes coming from local smoke stacks and who knows what else can change the composition of the air we breathe in a heartbeat.

Inside air is by no means static either. In addition, most would agree that inside air is often of a lower quality than outside air. Carpeting, paints, cleaning chemicals not to mention cosmetics and other personal health products all contribute to the long and growing list of possible substances that could be and probably are adversely affecting your health.

This should give you some ideas on ways to get to the bottom of some of those symptoms, whether you're aware of them or not.

I've heard all kinds of claims regarding sensitivity corrections. I can tell you from my own experience that sensitivity corrections almost always work. I can also tell you that, even if they work, if you don't tackle the energetic reasons why you developed the sensitivity in the first place, the odds are good that your old friends, your sensitivities, will be back to visit.

If you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, give yourself some relief by correcting those pesky sensitivities first. Then, with your energetic Band Aid in place, work to correct those energetic imbalances that are the root of the problem.  You can get a good running start by reading the back issues of this newsletter.

I wish you luck in your journey. I have to warn you though, once you start you'll find more healing treasures than you could ever have imagined. They're all around you. All you have to do is open your eyes.

Berit's Corner
Berit Lees

There's so much bad news at the moment especially with what has happened in Haiti that I decided to change my focus from watching heart breaking stories to something completely different.  If nothing else, this shift puts me in a better frame of mind and allows me to handle the awful news about Haiti and other world events.

For almost seven years our little corner of the world (Vancouver and Whistler, BC, Canada) has been preparing for a giant party - the 2010 Winter Olympics.  For many of us living here, we haven't paid much attention to all the news put out by our Olympic Organizing Committee because it mainly had to do with things like the construction of buildings and roads, transportation, accommodation, and all the other factors involved in making the games become a reality.

Olympic MittensTime went by and before we all knew it there was an Olympic Village, a stunning new highway to Whistler, a new rapid transit line and everyone wants to own a pair of red mittens!  Yes, the most coveted item that everyone wants are a pair of the official Olympic mittens.  The reason - they're made of wool, look great, and money from sales goes to support our Canadian Olympic athletes.  I like that part the best.

And if the mittens aren't enough to get everyone excited, there's even a local beer which has  been made especially for the Olympics.  I love the label!

Beavers

The Olympic Organizing Committee released a report last week proudly announcing that everything is finished and ready to go!  And then they turned on the lights of the Olympic rings.  Seeing the rings against the back drop of the harbour in Vancouver at night brought a lump to my throat.

Plympic Rings3

.

Although I wasn't born in Canada, I was raised in Vancouver and think it's a beautiful city.  I'm proud to say I live here and am excited that the world is going to see and hear all about Vancouver starting Feb. 12th.  No matter where you live in the world I'm sure you will see images of Vancouver and Whistler because the estimate is that the TV viewing audience will be around two billion people!  So, even if you're not into sports, you'll probably see something about Vancouver.  If you've never been here, and after being introduced to it during the Olympics, you decide you would like to visit, let me know.  Alex and I would be delighted to meet you for a drink - be it coffee, wine (we have a thriving wine industry here) or a Three Beavers beer. :-)

I wish all the Olympic athletes from around the world - Good Luck!

Till next month,
Take care.
