In This Issue:

Happy New Year!

It's the start of a new year, a new decade and the 17th year of publishing Reflections!  A good way to get 2010 underway is to read all the articles in this edition of Reflections because they offer some very helpful suggestions for all of us on how to get mentally and physically fit. Many people make New Year's resolutions and have a hard time keeping them, so Alex has offered some useful tips and advice on how to make your resolutions stick.  Dave is always on the lookout for new and exciting "stuff" to tell us about, and he's found something that should be of interest to anyone that has some unwanted emotional baggage hanging around and would like to get rid of it.  Tom provides us with a very easy Energy Medicine technique to help boost our immune system and also help us to deal with fear.  I'm proud to announce Susan Stone, our new Contributing Columnist.  She has a wealth of experience using a number of healing modalities and I'm sure we will all learn from, and enjoy her articles a great deal.  This month Susan introduces us to the amazing healing properties of Bach Flowers Essences, which work very well in conjunction with EFT.  And, last but not least, I make some New Year's resolutions that I'm planning on keeping, especially since I read Alex's article. :-)

Enjoy, and may 2010 be a wonderful year for all of you!

A Sure-Fire Way to Keep Your New Year's Resolutions!

By Dr. Alexander R. Lees

Another choice for the title of this article could be: Reasons why New Year's resolutions don't work, and what to do to make them work!  Recently a friend of mine made the following pronouncement: "I've decided that from now on, I won't be making any more New Year's resolutions."  After a short pause, he added, "And, you're probably wondering why, aren't you?"  "Er, sure," I uttered, trying my best to look intrigued, as opposed to my left without a program look.

"Well," he continued on, "I've made 'em every year, year after year, and I just can't keep 'em.  I start out with the best of intentions.  I look at all the health benefits involved, I get really excited and determined, and then POOF! the resolve is gone and it's back to the same old same old, except I now have guilt on top of it all.  I suppose you're going tell me to tap on it, aren't you?" he finished accusingly.

After taking my own good time - designed of course, to appear deep in contemplation, and therefore wise, I finally said, "You know, what you just said really hits the mark.  I'm willing to bet a lot of people go through the very same thing, then beat themselves up for it into the bargain."

"So what are you going to do about it?" he challenged.  "Well, first of all, I'm going to thank you for giving me a great idea to write about for the next newsletter; Berit's done hers, David, Susan and Tom are right on time and I'm the straggler.  I better grab a pen and...  "What about my problem?" he interjected.  "I pour out my heart and soul, and now you're going... wait a minute... you're going to explain something, you're going to write an article, which I'll have to wait for, and because it's an article you're not going to charge me for an answer.  Do I have this right?"  "You catch on fast for a guy with a PhD," I answered.

To do something positive with my friend's query, it's useful to quickly review the parts involved.  After all, everything has a structure of one form or another - even problems. Understanding the structure is the first step, and if not the first, then certainly an important step in moving towards a solution.  One part of our brain is involved with automating things for us.  Let's take food as a subject matter so as to better understand the parts.

As I mentioned, there is a part of the brain that automates processes and procedures.  For example, when first introduced to the concept of riding a bike, pressing down on the left pedal results in falling off the thing to the left.  Same thing happens with the right pedal.  After a few repeats, the survival instinct kicks in and begins to co-ordinate a sense of balance coupled with leg movements, and so on.  Pretty soon we are staying on the bike and ready for the next step, which usually begins with "Look Ma! No hands!"  We have now developed a habit of riding a bike.

In a like and similar way, we develop habits around food.  The human brain is an equal opportunity employer; it will develop and support useful habits just as easily as negative or unsupportive ones.  Suppose a child is comforted with certain foods whenever the parents bicker, or the child cuts him/herself or makes a mistake and is miserable, and so on.  It doesn't take long for us to then find ourselves habituated to certain foods, so every time we feel down or upset, we begin to automatically seek out certain foods.

This phase is referred to as a compulsion, and that is because connecting certain foods to feeling better (after something goes wrong) involves another part of the brain, the pleasure centre.

In an experiment done with mice, the researchers introduced them to two buttons:  One supplied a food pellet, and the other supplied a drug directly into the pleasure centre of the brain.  The mice soon realized pressing one button prevented the other from working for a few minutes.  It didn't take long before the mice were habituated to the stimuli that activated the pleasure centre, and would have starved rather than give up this stimulation.

Now, we make a New Year's resolution.  We are going to make a change for the better, and stop those bad habits, especially around eating.  By understanding the above, that is we have experience after experience enforcing each other in memory, we also have habituation.  The pleasure centre is involved as well.  Knowing this makes it easier to understand why a five minute, or even a ten minute period of time devoted to deleting the program is doomed to failure.

So, what is the answer, or is there even a possibility of arriving at one?

Of course there is, but the desired charge will have to have more time invested than the five or ten minutes used to make a declaration.  It needs time to condition in, and it will need to be repeated.  Remember, you aren't just trying to condition something in, you are also deleting some deeply integrated files from your neurology as well.

One way to speed up the change (unless you have a belief everything of value requires blood, sweat and tears to achieve, in which case, simply skip this next step) is to realize that regardless of the complexities involved in habits they still need a fuel or energy to run them, and that energy is referred to as emotions.

Enter the tapping technique.  That's right, the tapping technique also works for breaking old habits, and speeds the installation of new ones.

It's virtually impossible to write the word patterns needed to satisfy everyone in one article, but if you have been playing around with the tapping, then you are probably better at developing the necessary word patterns to suit.  Here are some suggestions to help you discover what to tap on.

  • First, begin to notice the triggers.  What situations, circumstances or events must occur for you to crave the If I eat some of that, I'll feel better program to kick in?
  • Take a few minutes to note which foods you crave - the ones that contribute to being overweight for example.  You could also include the ones that you feel would be impossible to give up.
  • Begin by tapping on, "This compulsion to eat (name the food)" or "This desire or need to eat (name the food)."
  • If you are also aware of the feeling involved, do a separate round for it.  An example might be: "This anxiety when (name the trigger or situation that fires the compulsion to eat)."
  • Another example might be: While tapping, focus on and use a reminder phrase for it: "This anxiety whenever my sister calls."
  • Then a round for: "This need to eat (name food) whenever my sister calls."
  • Then tap for the lust, the craving, the compulsion, the need to eat a specific food, and name the food.
I would suggest you do this daily and complete the session with a round designed to strengthen your resolve.  "I choose" are two excellent words to begin a positive re-enforcement round, so give that a try as well.  For example: "I choose to stay committed to this change and I choose to tap daily on my cravings and the triggers."

Then, perhaps before you know it, the day will come when all the old habits around food will be a thing of the past and the new habits will be locked in just as well as the old ones were.  When friends inquire as to how you did it, you can smile and say, "I just decided."

Here's to all of us sticking to our New Year's resolutions and eating well in 2010!

An Exciting New Tapping Technique
By David Marshall

One of the best of bits of spam I have ever received came into my inbox a few weeks ago. It was about Percussive Suggestion Technique  (PSTEC), of which I had never heard.

So I followed the link to the website, which has a nice simple presentation and tells you everything you need to know about PSTEC and about its creator Tim  Phizackerley.  Let's start with Tim.  Although he has spent a long time in the computer world he is also a hypnotherapist.  Using the combination of his skills Tim seems to have made an incredible breakthrough in the effectiveness of treating any negative emotion.  The list of things that can be treated is quite long and is getting longer.  Typical uses are   stress, anxiety, relationship issues, anger and resentment, depression, lack of  confidence, unresolved grief, post traumatic stress, phobias, nightmares, panic attacks, consequences of abuse, obsessions, behavioural addictions, compulsions, self hatred, low self esteem, jealousy and guilt, eating disorders, work or health related anxieties, and so on.

To clear their negative emotions clients identify an event where they experienced a negative emotion (anger, fear, guilt, sorrow, sadness, sense of loss, etc.) and concentrate on that event as they listen to a recording that Tim has made.  This is all explained in other audio tracks on the website, which are all downloadable, and as you listen to the recorded induction there are parts where you tap the fingers of your left hand slowly, your right hand quickly, and both hands together.

Unlike EFT you don't have to tap any particular pressure point, you just have to tap something - it could be a desk or table, your knees, the armchair, anything that is within easy reach.  And to me, this represents a significant step forward that Tim has made because this forces your conscious mind to do something different and it also utilizes both sides of the brain ( anyone who knows alphabet edit will recognize this ).

While you're doing this tapping, Tim has made a brilliant induction that combines many aspects of all good therapeutic script writing.  It incorporates positive suggestions, embedded commands, pacing current experience, confusion and sensory overloads.  Anyone who knows how to create a therapeutic script will appreciate what a challenge this is!  It must have taken him a long time to come up with such an impressive recording.

And what do other people think?  Well here are some quotes from the feedback on Tim's website.

"THE RESULT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! I didn't know what to expect because when I started the level was about an 8 but it disappeared COMPLETELY I was actually laughing at the end of the track and today despite trying so hard to recall the event nothing happened."

"This is really fantastic, I have tried EFT which does work well but nothing as fast or as completely as PSTEC. Thank you very much for making this so available and free, it is an incredibly valuable resource and I look forward to future developments"

One of my clients sent me the following feedback:

"Negative feeling: Despair at knowing I was unable to help close relatives.
Severity was eight (8) on a scale of 1-10.
At the start of the tapping it was eight, within just a few minutes the feeling got to five, and within the next few minutes I could not bring the feeling back at all.  By the end of the session I could not recall the problem and the feeling was a one."

I would like to collect some simple feedback from anybody who uses PSTEC.  Please send feedback to me (here) with PSTEC in the subject line. I would like the feedback to follow these guidelines:

  • Outline of the problem.
  • What name did you give the negative feeling (fear, stress, nervousness, lack of confidence, etc.).
  • Degree of severity of the feeling before treatment (self assessed on a scale of 0 to 10, where 10 is extremely severe).
  • What was your experience during the process.
  • Degree of severity of the feeling after running the process (self assessed on a scale of 0 to 10 where 0 is no affect at all).
  • Overall comments.
And of course the most important point is that Tim offers all the required recordings for free, yes, that's right.  There is no charge for downloading and using these recordings.  The  thing  that you need to do now is to  find out how good PSTEC by using it yourself and telling everyone else you know where they can  get a copy.  Check it out here.

It really is a very powerful technique, and so simple that it only takes about 15 minutes and you can put it on  your mobile phone, your MP3 player, your laptop or your notebook.  There is no longer any excuse to suffer the effects of negative emotional experiences any more.  Download the MP 3 files, and just get started now!

The Magic of Bach Flowers Essences
By Susan Stone

The Bach Flowers Essences are a perfect adjunct to EFT.  I can't assume that you all know what the Bach Flowers Essences are so I'll provide a brief introduction.  Upon hearing the name, one may think that the Flower Essences are a sort of aromatherapy but they are not.   Dr. Edward Bach was a physician, bacteriologist, immunologist around the beginning of the 1900s.  In his early 20s he was diagnosed with stomach cancer, was operated on and given a few months to live.  His passion was so great for life and what he wanted to accomplish that he recovered.

His desire to live gave him the belief that our personality directly influences the disease.   Thus he concluded that treating the personality of the patient is more important than the disease.  He also believed that God didn't plunk us down here on the planet and say "Good luck surviving, you'll have to fend for yourself," but we have been provided within nature all that we need to heal ourselves.  He spent the remaining years of his life, armed with keen intuition and the strongest desire to find the plants that transform negative personality traits to positive ones thus a person would heal because they would become happy.

Dr. Bach said that "Disease of the body itself is nothing but the result of the disharmony between soul and mind." (From: "The Original Writings of Edward Bach" Judy Howard and John Ramsell, page 50.)  Dr. Bach successfully treated and documented over 10,000 cases using the Bach Flowers.

His research and discovery showed that plants have positive emotional qualities.  In order to extract those vibratory emotional qualities he placed the chosen plant part in water, with the power of the Sun upon it.  The plant then released its vibration into the water.  When one consumed the water, that emotional vibration transformed the patient's negative personality traits.  Dr. Bach made sure that none of the plants are toxic and they would be safe for all living creatures at any age.

I hope you are saying "Wow, this sounds great, I can't wait to try them!" The Bach Flower Essences are phenomenal in helping support people in the transformational process.   After concluding an EFT session a person can be further supported based upon the "essence" of the session.   So let me give you a few of my favorites, just to get help you get started.  Here are some of the 38 Bach Flower Essences that could accompany and EFT practice:  Elm, Mimulus, White Chestnut, Walnut, Gentian, and Star of Bethlehem.

Elm is for composure. If one has the tendency to feel easily overwhelmed, Elm will give them a sense of calm.

Mimulus is for courage.  It will help one release fear, anxiety, and nervousness.  What a wonderful adjunct to an EFT session where someone is working on fear issues.

White Chestnut is for positivity.  I think I just made up this word positivity, but we need a word that is the opposite of negativity!  One would take White Chestnut if they find that their mind keeps rolling around negative unwanted thoughts, thoughts that may prevent sleep or they can't help reviewing and reliving an argument or a negative situation.

Walnut is for transition.  Anytime one is having a difficult time with letting go of the past and has a hard time with change, or separating from a relationship then Walnut is helpful.  It is a link breaker.  Walnut is also helpful in protecting us from negative outside influences.  For instance, if one is easily distracted from one's purpose by others than Walnut is helpful.

Gentian is for hopefulness.  When one feels a sense of despair when it seems that things could be better, when there is discouragement because life takes a positive step forward but then a step backwards then Gentian is helpful.  It will help keep a positive outlook.  This is helpful during multiple EFT sessions when a person needs help in keeping their chin up!

Star of Bethlehem is for shock, or trauma.  If one feels that they've not fully recovered from an accident, a death of a loved one or any shock or trauma then Star of Bethlehem is that soothing essence that helps one release from that incident.  What a wonderful essence for an EFT session when your patient has had this kind of suffering.

To make an essence is very simple.  1. Take a dosage dropper bottle and almost fill it  with pure water.  2.  Add 2 drops of each of the chosen Essences.  3. Top off the bottle with a little brandy or vinegar (approx. ½ tsp.) to preserve it.  Give it few shakes and loving thoughts!  The recommended dosage is 4 drops of the Essence, 4 times a day. The drops can be mixed into water or any other beverage. You can put them directly into your mouth, not necessarily under your tongue.

Dr. Bach's life was devoted to understanding and providing for all of the emotions that separate us from the Divine and helping us heal in body, mind and spirit.  I've been using the Bach Flower Essences for over 30 years, they have been one of the cornerstone's in my practice, patients ask for them and I only get positive feedback from their usage.  I hope you try them because I know you'll love them too.  I'd love to hear your comments and questions.

How Fear Can Affect Our Immune System
By Tom Dorzab

Allergies and sensitivities are such a huge topic that I could talk about them almost forever. If I keep dwelling on this same topic though, I'm afraid I'm going to get a reputation like Uncle John. You remember Uncle John, he's the one who has to show everybody a slide show of all his vacation pictures from the last 10 years every time there is a family gathering. So maybe it's time to shift gears and move on to greener pastures before I put everyone to sleep with all this allergy talk.

The problem is, now we need to find a suitable topic? Is there anything going on health wise that would be of interest to everyone? Let's see, maybe SWINE FLU! While this topic seems to be the subject of many newscasts and newspapers lately, and the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) are telling us the end of the world is near, the reality of the data indicates that this is one of the mildest flu seasons in recent history. Vaccines and media hype aside, immunity to disease, whether it's flu or any other disease, is a subject that is always important to keep up on. One never knows when a truly dangerous disease will threaten our planet.

In the world of energy medicine, immunity from disease can be enhanced by keeping the various energy systems balanced or strengthened as the case may be. Working with all the various energy systems is a pretty big order. Fortunately, since all the various energy systems are interconnected, and since working with one often affects at least some of the others, it is often possible to have a profound effect on the whole by working with only one system.

In this article I will focus my attention primarily on just one system and will hopefully demonstrate how, by your spending time on this one system, it's possible to gain amazing benefits for many other systems as well.

Many have talked about the polarities of fear and love and how love is health enhancing and fear is health destructive. I'm not sure it's as simple as that, but I can assure you that fear, that is excessive, prolonged and often unfounded fear, can have a devastating effect on your energy systems. The ominous and nearly continuous predictions by WHO and CDC in nearly all news outlets worldwide have no doubt caused a great deal of fear and anxiety. If left unchecked, this fear can result in a variety of problems including a depressed immune system.

First let's outline some of the basic energetic mechanisms involved with fear. In Chinese Medicine fear is related to an out-of-balance Water Element. Remember the Water Element? It's one of the Five Elements that include Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal. The Five Elements are the basis of Chinese Medicine.

The Water Element is further broken down into two meridians. Remember the meridians? They're what acupuncture is based upon. Anyway, the meridians associated with the Water Element are the Kidney Meridian and the Bladder Meridian. When the Water Element is out-of-balance, you can bet you're also having problems with your Kidney and Bladder Meridians. Besides the problems that may be expected when these meridians aren't working at peak performance, such as low back pain associated with the Kidney Meridian and urination problems associated with the Bladder Meridian, a wide variety of other symptoms could also show up. Problems such as losing your hair, eyesight changes or nervousness and anxiety are just a few.

I have had several clients recently that have beautifully illustrated the point I am trying to make. They were pretty much feeling lousy in many different areas. Energetically the tests showed that most or all of their meridians were out-of-balance, all of their chakras were a mess, they had adrenal and thyroid weaknesses and a variety of other energy tests showed they were really in need of a tune up.

Now I could have worked with the meridians individually, cleared the chakras, worked with the thyroid and adrenals and finished up with all the other corrections and they would have probably felt much better after the three hour session. Instead, I chose to work first with the Water Element.

I asked them to think of the issue that was the cause of their greatest fear at the moment and to keep thinking about it. There was no need whatsoever for me to know what that issue was. They were lying face-up. So, while sitting at their head, I placed the palm of one hand on their forehead and the palm of the other on the back of their head with my thumb resting on the occipital ridge at the base of their skull. About twenty minutes later I began to feel a pulsing in one hand. Then I felt it in the other hand. Eventually the pulsing synchronized and I felt the pulsing in both palms at the same time indicating an endpoint.

The results amazed even me! Virtually every test, tests that had previously indicated problems in many different energy systems with virtually any symptom or symptoms possible, now showed the systems to be in harmony! What a powerful tool we all have at our disposal!

I'm not saying that this will happen everytime with everyone. I am saying though that this generalized effect is not the least bit uncommon. Also remember that if left unchecked, your fear can have devastating effects on all of your energy systems including those that enhance or destroy your immune system.

The great thing is, you can actually do this to yourself! If you're caught in fear, just think about that fear, hold the same places I held and wait for the pulses to synchronize. That's all there is to it.

Of all the many things you can do to enhance your immune system, this is probably one of the easiest. Do yourself a favour and add this to your health tool box. You'll be glad you did.

Berit's Corner

Most of you that have been reading Reflections for a while know that I like to get on my soap box now and then and offer unsolicited advice.  The last time I did was in the Christmas edition where I basically "advised" people to forget all the rules about how to act during the holidays and just eat, drink and be merry.  To my delight a number of people wrote to say how much they enjoyed the December edition - they had some giggles and thought my advise was spot on.  I'm sure there were some that didn't agree with what I wrote, but that's OK.  The beauty of passing out unsolicited advice is that people don't have to follow it if they don't want to.

As I write this the year is coming to a close, and newspapers, magazines, TV, blogs and all the other avenues people use to communicate are all offering us advice on how to behave in the new year.  We're being told to do this or that, and to not do this or that.

Most of us buy into all this advice and give it our best shot... for about 30 days.  By then we're exhausted from all the new exercise routines we've been trying and probably quite hungry from trying to eat less.  The whole effort has not been a lot of fun and by February we start to drift back to our old ways.  We were so motivated on Jan. 1st and so excited about all the changes we were going to manifest.  What happens?

I'm sorry to say that I don't have a clue about what goes wrong.  And, for that simple reason I wasn't going to make any New Year's resolutions.  But, after reading Alex's article this month I became interested and encouraged to try making some New Year's resolutions for myself.  So here goes.

  • I will brush our doggie Ty more often.  He has really fine silky hair and every day on our off leash walks he ends up with a variety of twigs and branches sticking to numerous parts of his body.  Alex calls them dangly bits.  If these dangly bits aren't brushed out, they become thick mats or clumps and tear at his skin.  The poor little guy deserves to have a mom that takes better care of him, especially because he's so darn cute!
  • I will try to dust and clean my house more often.  I admit this is my least favourite thing to do, after ironing.
  • I will try to remember to turn the shower head to "off" so that Alex doesn't get soaked when he turns on the water.  We have a shower/tub combination so we turn on the water to get it to the right temperature and then step into the tub.  For some reason he doesn't like getting his head blasted with lukewarm or cold water before he steps into the shower!
  • I will try to get organized around paper work.  Most days I can't see the surface of my desk because there's so many piles of paper on top of it.
  • I will continue to eat well mainly because I love good food, especially pastries. :-)
  • I will continue to go for a walk every day.  It's good for Ty and for me.
As for all the other stuff, like losing ten pounds, doing exercise (besides walking) and a whole host of other stuff I should be doing - I'm not even going to attempt "to try."  I've made six resolutions and I noticed that three of them started with "I'll try" and three with "I will."  I have a pretty good idea which (of the six) resolutions I'll keep.  They have to do with Ty, walking and eating - three of my favourite things, so they'll be easy to do.  As for the other three, I'll "try" my best! :-)

I'll see you all back here at the beginning of February 2010 and if you have gone ahead and made some New Year's resolutions, I wish you all the best.  This could be the year they work... especially if we follow Alex's recommendations.  I'm planning on making mine work and I'll be rooting for your success too!

Till next month,
Take care.
