In This Issue:

It seems the issue of health is on everyone's mind.  There's nothing like a pandemic to get our attention!  To help us sort through all the information (and mis-information) out there, Alex writes about how we can take better care of our immune system.  Our immune system is our first line of defense against infection and disease so this is a good place to start on our journey to maintaining good health.  Dave writes about a fascinating experience he had many years ago that may have resulted in where he is today (happily living in Spain).  The question is, "Was it a prophesy or did he use his imagination to get there?"  Tom gives us the Energy Medicine Allergy Elimination protocol so we can all try it on ourselves, and get rid of those pesky allergies/sensitivities.  Mike takes a look at what makes us sick or healthy, and helps us to realize we do have choices.  And, I'm on the hunt for another writer for our newsletter, specifically a femail writer.  So, all you women out there, please read Berit's Corner, and if you're interested, contact me.  I'm counting on you!

Enjoy!

How to have a healthy Immune System
By Dr. Alexander R. Lees

How did we all get into such a state of confusion about a health issue?  Maybe it's due to the flood of information in the media.  Maybe it's because it is flu season again.  Or, it's the push by authorities (around the world) for everyone to be vaccinated, especially for the N1H1 flu, yet at the same time, the news is citing a shortage of the vaccine.  Whatever the reason, our office has been flooded with concern regarding the immune system.  Last week, I was interviewed for an upcoming health conference, and I bet you can guess what the topic was that the interviewer wanted me to talk about.  If you said, "Gee, let's see now.  Let me guess... the immune system?" you're correct!  So, let's have a look under the hood, as it were, and find out how the immune system works.

During the first three hours of life on your own, a series of signals are generated, and the T cells of the immune system now have their orders: Travel through the entire body, and as you do, record everything you encounter.  Once the entire territory is duly mapped and recorded, we will call the results SELF.  This will become the reference blueprint.  Thereafter, anything you encounter that isn't on that original map, you will consider it non-self, or hostile.  You will then, as good little soldiers, destroy non-self.

Just to give the whole thing a fighting chance, 50% of these soldiers are preprogrammed with useful information.  This information was passed down the line to you and is about viruses, bacteria, and other potential nasties encountered by your ancestors, and serve as a built-in protection.   These guys are in effect battle hardened from previous invasions, and are a welcome addition.  The other 50% are to learn as they go, which is especially useful when a new virus or bacteria emerges.  Remember both viruses and bacteria don't necessarily fight fair.  Once they realize their picture is on CNN and every post office wall, the sneaky little devils seek to disguise themselves. This is called mutation.  No problem.  If you've taken good care of your immune system, it will in turn, take good care of you.

How, you may ask?  There are three ways.

1.  Certain foods contain nutrients that boost the immune system.  There isn't enough space in this article to list them all, but not to worry.  You can simply Google something like: food for the immune system and you will find a wealth of information and you can proceed from there.  However, if you run into a recipe requesting you boil bat wings at midnight after blending in some herb only available on the east side of Tibet, keep searching.  You will easily find foods, supplements, etc., readily available at grocery stores, drug stores and health food outlets.

2.  The second way to boost the immune system is exercise.  Study after study has documented that a 30 minute brisk walk, three or more times a week, is an excellent way to accomplish this.

3.  The third way is to reduce your stress, especially emotional stress.

For the longest time, medical students were taught the immune system was autonomous, that is, it operates without being affected by conscious processes, or emotional states.  They reasoned that any emotional response was due to learning you had a disease or a certain medical condition.  We now know a lot more than we did then about the immune system, and the following is a synopsis (and paraphrased) of the new information.

Dr. Margaret Kemeny - Professor of Psychiatry at UCSF.
When we are sad, lonely, afraid, or angry, specific measurable changes occur within the brain.  These changes in turn produce changes within the body, which more easily allow for colds, flues, infections, inflammation and so on.

Dr. David Felton - former Professor of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Rochester, NY.
Discovered nerve cells within the immune system.  This discovery quickly led to others; that is the immune system has its own nervous system (communication) and is capable of memory, and acting upon those memories.

Dr. Candace Pert - Neuroscientist and was a a Research Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.
Mapped the pathways of neuropeptides, only to discover these information substances are the biochemical equivalent of emotions.

Dr. Robert Ader - Professor of Psychosocial Medicine, Professor of Psychiatry, Clinical and Social Psychology, and of Medicine - University of Rochester, NY.  Also a pioneer in the Centre for Psychoneuroimmunology Research.
Was involved with various experiments that provided even more insight - the immune system can learn, and is therefore trainable.

Now, let's take what we've covered so far and put it all together.
  • The immune system can be boosted and quickly learn to protect us against new threats by proper intake of certain foods, exercise and reduced stress.
  • The immune system has a memory and a nervous system.  This allows it to communicate with the head honcho, the brain.
  • Emotional stress compromises the immune system's ability to protect against invaders.
  • If the emotive stress is of sufficient intensity and/or lasts over time, then even the ANS (Autonomous Nervous System) becomes involved.  The sympathetic side is activated.
  • This activation can result in depression, anxiety, etc., due to the release of stress hormones - cortisol, adrenalin, etc.
  • Blood is shunted from the inner core of the body (digestion, for instance) to the large muscle groups, ready for flight or fight.  (The old, "Where's the saber toothed tiger or wooly mammoth?" routine.)
  • This shift borrows energy from the immune system, weakening it in the process.  Increased anxiety, depression, heart arrythmia, diabetes, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue are all examples of a chronic emotive stress state, along with a compromised immune system, and we haven't really touched on auto immune diseases.
Dr. Deepak Chopra tells us that humour is a great defense strategy when talking about our first line of defense, the immune system.  He also says that if you want to immediately produce a few dollars worth of serotonin, make sure you have a good belly laugh daily.  (Yes, serotonin, the feel good neuro transmitter, is made in the gut!).

And finally, make a decision to reduce/resolve emotional stress.  There are plenty of tools and techniques available to help pump up our immune system.  Just to remind you, here's a list of a few well tested ones.
  • Meditation.
  • Guided imagery.
  • Tapping specific acupuncture points.
  • Listening to relaxation music.
  • Practice compassion, and giving to others.
  • Hypnosis (all hypnosis is self hypnosis, even if you use another person to guide you).
  • Massage.
  • Warm baths, preferably with lit candles.
Something I like to recommend: Remember the past, live in the now, plan and think positively about the future.

After all, they are your thoughts, therefore you are the thinker, and this is true, regardless of whether the thoughts are good ones, or pessimistic ones.  It all begins when you decide, never before.  Once you decide to support your immune system, it will do the rest.  It will look after you.  By the way, Berit and I have been together for 33 years.  In the last twenty or so, we've had neither a cold nor the flu.  Nor have we been vaccinated, or taken any medication to ward off either.

So, make that decision, and reap the benefits.  And, say goodbye to the H1N1 flu as well.

The Importance of Preparing a Good Lie

One night 4 college students were partying until late and did not study for a test which was scheduled for the next day.  In the morning, they thought of a plan.
They made themselves look as dirty as possible, with grease and dirt.  They then went to the teacher and said that they had gone to a wedding last night and on their return, a tire burst on their car and they had to push the car all the way back home and that they were in no condition to do the test.

The teacher kindly allowed them to do a re-test after 3 days.  They thanked him and said they would be ready by that time.  On the third day, they went for their test.

The teacher said that as this was a Special Condition Test, all four were required to sit in separate classrooms.  They all agreed as they had prepared well in the last 3 days.  The test consisted of 1 single question, worth a total of 100 marks.

Question:  1. Which tire?

a) Front Left
b) Front Right

c) Back Left
d) Back Right

Prophesy or Imagination?
By David Marshall

A long time ago I was one of the trainers on an advanced personal development course which involved a lot of introspection, and one of the things we used to do was called guided imagery.  I have just discovered that nowadays it tends to be called a variety of other things mainly to do with meditation, guided meditation, structured meditation etc.

The exercise we used to do  started with an ordinary relaxation method which you may have heard of: Relax your feet, relax your ankles, relax your knees and so on, all the way up the body.  Then when the students had achieved a very relaxed state, the guided imagery part of the exercise would begin.  Very simply, the trainer leading the  session, would start telling a story which would guide the class through their imagination.  The next part of the exercise was to picture an experience, and then to discuss it, or explain what had happened, to another student.  Of course we could not tell what the people would experience or discover about themselves -  sometimes nothing much would happen, but at other times intense revelations would be made in the minds of the participants.

The story was a very basic one where we would start in a field with the sun shining on a pleasantly warm day and in the distance you could see a dwelling.  With the warmth of the hot sun shining on our backs we would then, in our imagination, move towards the dwelling.  When we reached the dwelling we would explore the outside and find a way in.  People discovered that they had all sorts of different kinds of dwellings.  They ranged from old houses, old cottages, garden sheds, and even, once in my case, a large, thatched, mud hut!   When attempting to find a way in to the dwelling some people found an open door, others an open window, and even a ladder to an upstairs room.  The power of people's imagination was incredible!

Once inside the dwelling we looked around and went into various rooms; some of the rooms were well lit and others were dark.  In the dark room, being in our imagination, we could turn the light on, and then we could see what was inside.  Some people made amazing discoveries and others, things that were quite scary!  As we explored the dwelling, we could invite some friends to join us, and when they had, we could discuss anything we liked with them.  You could even say things to them that you would never have said in real life.

Having spent some time in the dwelling, we then went outside and noticed in the distance there were some mountains and we moved off towards them.  As we started to climb the mountain, on the way to the top, we would find three interesting things that would help us.  There was no telling what people would find.  Could be anything - an axe, a hammer, a cup, a chain, a sword, a cross, or rope - just as long as it was useful - in one case even a meat pie!

Having spent some time making our way up the mountain we eventually got to the top and there, for most people, was a big surprise.  In my case, when I reached the mountain top, I had a vision of an old man with long grey hair and a beard.  This happened before the trainer had said anything.  Much to my surprise, the old man turned to me (indicating with his hand the mountain range that was below us) and said, " You see all this, you can have it all, if you want it," and then he disappeared.

Then we would return down the mountain, and we could choose whether to leave the three useful things on the mountain or to take them with us.  We could go past the dwelling, noticing whether anything had changed and back to the field, in the warm sun.  That was the end of the exercise.

The review sessions that the students then had amongst themselves were really quite amazing, with quite unexplainable insights being encountered.  Of course it was very difficult to quantify any benefit that was gained from this exercise.  All I can say is that almost every one found it to be exceptionally beneficial.  Some things that had been lurking in their unconscious were brought into the light, seen in a new way, and quite inexplicably, resolved.

There were many fascinating tales that the students told of this imaginary experience. One middle aged woman was crying profusely at the end of the exercise, and as I had been running that session, I asked if she was OK and did she need anything. She said no, she was fine and the person she met on the mountain top was her Father who had died a few months before. She explained that they had had a wonderful chat about the many things that she had wanted to tell him but had not had the chance before he died. Then they just said goodbye. Something she had not had the chance to do in real life.

I have no explanation for how, or why, strange things happened, but I do remain fascinated by them.

On a personal note, I  have become an old man with long grey hair and a beard, and I live up a track, on a Spanish mountain, overlooking the valleys. None of which was accomplished with conscious intent - it just happened that way!!  Is it just a coincidence that this is what the old man on the mountain top had prophesied?  Or, is it something else?  I'll leave it up to you to imagine.

Sensitivity Correction Protocol
By Tom Dorzab

Unfortunately, the results of our Allergy Elimination Trial were not as good as we had hoped, and we do not have enough data to report any results.  We have heard from some people that they had a problem submitting the data.  When they filled in the data and hit "submit," they received an error message saying "Session has timed out."  We don't know how many people may have encountered this glitch, but if you did, could you please let me know.  We aren't sure where, or how, the glitch happened, so we would appreciate hearing from you, so we can fix it.

Meanwhile, it's time to let you all in on a secret. This trial was set up to be a real trial. That means it had two protocols. One was the protocol we have already used with success. The other was a "control" protocol that I simply made up on the spot. Half of Dr. Lees' newsletter list received the link to the real protocol and the other half received the link to the control.  I still want to get this information out there for people to use, so to help you further, I've written out the protocol for you below.

Please Note:  I urge you to review last month's newsletter before proceeding. There are some possible safety concerns you need to be aware of.

Sensitivity Correction Protocol

This correction protocol assumes the client is on his back, but it can be modified to fit other positions.

Testing
  • Test for a sensitivity by placing the substance on the solar plexus and applying the Spleen Meridian Muscle Test. A weak test indicates a sensitivity. If you're new to muscle testing, review my article in the April 2008 issue of this newsletter.
  • You can normally correct more than one sensitivity at a time, but be sure to test for the suitability of the correction. To test for the suitability of the correction, with the substance or substances resting on the solar plexus, ask if it's safe to correct the sensitivities today and then test with the Spleen Meridian Muscle Test. If the answer is no (a weak test) remove one substance and test for suitability of correction again. Continue this process until you get a strong test. The most substances I have corrected at one time is 10. Only once have I needed to remove all but one substance. So far I have always been able to correct at least one substance sensitivity.
Correction

  • With the substance or substances resting on the solar plexus, begin making figure 8 movements with your hand over the solar plexus. While making the figure 8 movements, have the palm of the hand facing the body for half of the figure 8 cycle and the back of the hand facing the body for the other half. Keep the hand no more than 6 inches from the client's body and continue the figure 8's for about 60 seconds.
  • Move to the right ear and repeat the figure 8's there for about 30 seconds.
  • Continue with about 30 seconds of figure 8's over each of the following locations: the top of the head, the left ear, the forehead and over each of the meridian endpoints. For a chart of all the meridian endpoints, see Donna Eden's book, Energy Medicine. Many of the endpoints are close together, so you can do these all at the same time, as if they were one endpoint.
That's all there is to it. I usually test all of the substances together over each Alarm Point (sorry Alarm Points are too difficult to cover here, see Donna Eden's book, Energy Medicine for more details) immediately after the correction and then test them all individually over each Alarm Point during the following session. I typically correct for all Alarm Point imbalances (again, too much information to explain here) prior to making the corrections, but it's probably not necessary.

This technique almost always works, but occasionally a highly sensitive person will go into Triple Warmer Reactivity (I hate to keep doing this to you, but again, too much information to include here) so it's a good idea to check for it. Sometimes the corrections for Triple Warmer Reactivity work and sometimes they don't. You will be blazing trails in this area and I would love to hear of your exploits.

You can also use a small spinning doughnut magnet on a string, but if you haven't been trained to test for a magnet sensitivity, you will probably want to avoid the magnet.  I've never used a crystal, but I suspect it would also work. Anything that stimulates the areas such as tuning forks, essential oils, etc. may work. Please let me know if you find other ways of using this protocol. The sky's the limit!

Good luck!

This should get most of you off to a running start. Give it a try and see what happens. You don't have to be any more special than you already are to use energy medicine effectively.

Note: Watching the video demonstration of how to do the technique may also be helpful.

Vomit!

By Dr. Mike McCallum

An instructor I had used to say, "If you give people good information, they'll make good decisions." I'd probably change that to, "If you give people good information, they'll ask better questions and in the presence of an open mind they will 'tend to' make better decisions." What, you may ask, does this have to do with vomit?

Well, last week I picked my youngest son up after school and when he got in the car he said, "I puked my breakfast up this morning."  When queried, he described how his friend wasn't feeling well and while sitting in class, his friend started to puke. My son, upon seeing this, puked too! He told us he had to eat his lunch early because he was hungry and he finished out the rest of the day without incident. Interesting conversation to be sure, but, what he said next is what I found most interesting. He said, "Dad, I'm sick, I need to go lie down."

I asked, "What makes you think you're sick?" He replied, "I puked."

Many people reading this would agree with his statement. For most of our lives we have been taught that symptoms mean sickness and a lack of symptoms mean health.  For most of our lives we have been inundated by magazines, television and radio, with the germ theory and all its implications. I'm sure that's why we catch things and we come down with stuff.  Please, visualize with me, that germ hiding in your child's Lego just waiting for you to walk by so it can catch you.

How do you define health? A number of years ago I was taking a course and one of the requirements was to read some stuff written by Ayn Rand. I liked how her writing reframed a lot of what we considered normal. One of the quotes that stuck with me was, "In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is - i.e. he must know his own nature and the nature of the universe in which he acts - i.e. he needs metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, which means: philosophy. He cannot escape from this need; his only alternative is whether the philosophy guiding him is to be chosen by his mind or by chance."

This one sentence changed my life on a number of levels. I started to question the assumptions.  One of those assumptions was:  This is health as defined by society. I read once that "society defines normal." I'm fairly sure that society has a definition of health. I'm also fairly certain that it's different from my definition. You see it really doesn't matter much to me how you define health, or even if your definition is different than mine. What I think is important is that you take the time to define it. That way if someone asks you, "What are you going to do about the swine flu?" you'll have a better answer than, "I don't know.  What are you going to do?" Last month I spoke about simple lifestyle changes and choices. Here is an opportunity for you to make a choice and decide what health is for you.

As I was putting this edition of Reflections together and reading the articles, I realized that four of the writers are male!  Now, I know that sounds a bit silly because three of the guys have been writing articles for years now, and I obviously know they are men.  Adding Dr. Mike McCallum just seemed to bring the fact to my conscious awareness -   I'm the lone female voice amongst all these men.  Please don't misunderstand, I love being in the company of such smart, bright, attractive, and funny men!  But, I also know that I don't write about the kind of stuff they do because I'm not a trained professional... of anything.  I'm not a therapist, an expert corporate trainer, an energy medicine practitioner or a doctor of chiropractic.  I'm just me. :-)

Being "me" is fun because not being a trained professional and having now reached a mature age, I can get on my soapbox any time and spout off about anything I want.  And, for long time readers of Reflections, you know I do that on a frequent basis. The worst that happens is some people write and complain about what I've written, and the best that happens is people write saying nice things about what I've written.  Either way, it's my contribution to our newsletter and I enjoy doing it.  I also feel that there has to be at least one female presence felt in our newsletter... guys can't have all the fun!

Having said all that, I also think we should have more than one female voice in our newsletter.  Men and women think and act differently, experience the world differently and each has their own unique voice.  I'd like to add another female voice to our newsletter.  So, here's the question:  Is there a female out there that would like to write articles for our newsletter?

I'm sure there is... somewhere.  It doesn't matter where you live, or what you do professionally.  Ideally I would like someone that is a professional at something.  Be it in one of the tapping techniques (EFT, etc.), NLP, energy medicine, energy psychology, life coach... in other words... someone in a helping profession.

I'm counting on all our female readers to please think about his.  If you're not interested, maybe you know someone that might be.  Please contact me (or have your friend/colleague contact me) so we can discuss it further.

Writing for our newsletter would be a big bonus for us (we'd have another female voice sharing her insights with our readers) and it would be excellent exposure for you.  Our newsletter goes out to people around the world and you can make many new friends and contacts.

Over the years, both Alex and I have been fortunate to make friends and contacts with a number of people through our newsletter.  We cherish those friendships and have been fortunate to meet some of those people in our travels. We also have plans to meet some of them in the near future.

I never knew that having a newsletter would be so rewarding and beneficial, especially back when we first started Reflections 16 years ago.  That was long before computers and the Internet.  Having a newsletter has been one of the most fun parts of our "job" and we thank all of our readers for sharing in our journey.  I can't guarantee we'll be doing it for another 16 years, but you never know. :-)

I look forward to hearing from any woman that would be interested in joining our gang of writers.  I know the guys would welcome sharing the space in our newsletter... and I certainly would.

Have a great November!  And, to our American friends -- Happy Thanksgiving!

Till next month,
Take care.
