"People are not broken and in need of fixing... most  people are just fine.  They may simply need a tune-up."

In This Issue:

Do you forget to do things?  Have you attended a workshop which was great, only to forget (a week later) what you learned?  If you answered "yes" to either question, Alex has a quick technique you can do to help yourself remember, what and when, you need to remember.  Unfortunately, Dave has some family issues back in the UK that need to be attended to, so he couldn't write an article this month.  We didn't want you to miss out on something from Dave, so we've included one of his previous articles about a very quick and easy technique you can learn to help reduce stress, or any unwanted bad feeling.  And, it only takes a minute to learn how to do it!  Tom has been busy with learning more about energy medicine and also creating a new technique to help with allergies.  He also has some exciting news about an Energy Medicine Allergy Elimination Trial.  I write about our wonderful summer of total relaxation and some fun we had.

Attention Practitioners:  If you are interested in mentoring, please have a look at our new Practitioner Mentoring Group.

Enjoy!

How to remember to do something... in the future

By Dr. Alexander R. Lees

The other day a client said, "Oh, darn, I forgot to tap!  How can I remind myself to remember to tap?"  This statement, or a variation of, comes up frequently.  Also, over the years I have heard many people say that they've attended a workshop or seminar and it was great.  They felt energized, excited and were eager to try the new skills they had learned.  They were motivated!  Many people have also said the same thing about seeing a therapist.  They say the session was terrific and they felt better, but a few days later, things were back to the way they were before the session.  And, for those that experienced this, it didn't matter if the technique used was Timeline therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, NLP based, tapping, or any other therapeutic intervention technique.  What happened to those feelings they experienced while at the workshop, or in the therapist's office?  How come they can't put into practice what they learned at the workshop or in the therapy session?

After becoming aware of this, and wanting to do something to change it, I remembered an NLP technique that would do the trick.  I think one of the reasons people weren't taking the new learning or skills into the "real world" was because the workshop presenter, or therapist, had not future paced the learning or experience adequately.

As it turned out, this was especially true in regards to tapping.  As a point of fact, many that have attended our tapping (EFT) workshops complained that although they felt the training they had received (elsewhere) was quite good, for some reason, they would find themselves in a problem situation, and only later would they realize they had forgotten to tap, and thus deal with whatever the problem was.

In other words, the person wasn't able to take the learning out of the seminar and into their every day lives.  The same can be said for a therapy session.  The person's issue was cleared in the office, but somehow it didn't translate or transport into their daily living experience.

So, what is future pacing?  This is the concept of contextualization.  It is not all that unusual for something learned in one place, or location (context) to be "unavailable" in another (context).  This is where future pacing comes in.  Future pacing provides a "bridge" from one context to another.

A simple futurepace can be done by simply saying to the client, "Now, can you imagine the next time you are in that situation, and realizing this resource is available to you."

Alternatively, if you are working with your own issue, then you can begin to imagine a situation in the future, and in that imagined scene, the you in the scene is remembering to tap, or use EFT, if you prefer, as soon as it is appropriate and viable to do so.  Repeating this future paced movie several times is good because this helps to "lock in" the likelihood you will remember.

The word pattern used to create the bridge can vary, the point is to assist the client, or yourself, in using the imagination to contextualize the changework or resource technique to when and where it is needed.

Developing the art of future pacing is but one more tool to add to your growing therapeutic toolbox, not to mention that using it not only adds elegance to your work, it will be much appreciated by others that you offer assistance to.

And, yes, you may even find situations, events or circumstances where future pacing to be a good thing... one excellent example is taking the learning out of a book or seminar, and having it available when you need it.  Now, I'd like you to imagine the next time, in some other context, where the use of future pacing and remembering to use it, or install it, would be useful for you!

For those inquisitive readers that like the science behind the scenes: The human mind, once programmed to generate an automatic response of any form, will fire that response, once exposed to the stimulus, within one fifth of a second.  For those responses that serve you well, that's fine, and, in some cases speeding up the response would be even more beneficial.

This can be a hindrance, however, when you are trying to remember to tap, for instance.  By using future pacing properly (and you do that with practise, practise, practise) you are conditioning the brain to remember to use EFT before the unwanted response fires.  Therefore the unwanted emotional response then becomes a stimulus for the mind/brain to remember to tap - a new response.

Now, aren't you glad my client asked how she could remember to tap? :-)

Something to do before you get out of bed!
By David Marshall

Have you ever had one of those times when something didn't go right and you felt very uncomfortable about it?  Well this happened to a friend of mine, he had just run a course for a client that didn't go well because the audience were too experienced for that level of training.  This happened because of incorrect publicity material distributed by the client.  It had happened two weeks before we met and he was still feeling quite upset about it.

This reminded me of something that I had learnt on the NLP Master Practitioner training that I had attended in Hawaii.  It was there I met a Puerto Rican guy called Ray. He had been a Major in the US army and had many tales to tell.  On this occasion, Ray asked me if I remembered the eye movement theory, which of course I did, because it was a really interesting part of NLP Practitioner level training.  You may know that the theory says that the way people move their eyes is an indication to how they are thinking (seeing images, hearing sounds, talking to themselves or  getting a feeling). Although many studies have failed to conclusively prove this, it still seems to have some interesting effects.

Ray asked me to remember an unpleasant experience.  Immediately I had a flash back to the worst  boss I ever had and I had that feeling you get when someone criticises you unjustly.  Ray watched my eye movements and said, "That's interesting, your eyes went up to your left and then down to your right."  According to eye movement theory that meant I had recalled something visually and then got a feeling.  I said that was absolutely right and he said, "See what happens if you do this, watch my finger."

He held his finger in front of my face and moved it from the centre diagonally to my left, back to the centre, horizontally to the left, back to centre, diagonally down to the left, and back to centre, diagonally down to the right, back to centre, horizontally to my right, and back to centre, and finally, diagonally to my right and which point I started laughing!  I was amazed at that! Now I thought that the old boss was just a stupid man who lacked knowledge of the subject  being discussed.  What Ray had just demonstrated was what became known as "breaking a synaesthesia" and has been developed further into a useful therapy called Eye Movement Desensitization Routine (EMDR) which is now used a lot in the treatment of PTSD. It is particularly good because there is very little talking involved.

It is a really good way of getting rid of unwanted feelings which you can do for yourself, and that  includes getting rid of the curse of the modern society - stress!  You can even use it in a preventative fashion. So that, let's say, you're expecting to have a meeting with someone, or you have do something, that you feel uncomfortable about.  Some time before the event, even before you get up in the morning, just lay in bed and think about the meeting.  Maybe get a visual image of the person or thing causing the problem, and, purposefully move your eyes around the positions.  You can do this in almost any way you like or you can move them from your upper left to your lower right and your upper right to your lower left and horizontally from left to right.  I always used to go round in circle, like Ray did when showed me, but it seems that an X pattern, a square pattern or even random movements will work. You need to do the movements from 5 to 10 times quite quickly and the feeling should become disconnected from the thought that it is connected to, and you will probably find that the visual image changes as well. You can even do it as a simple exercise to start the day.

So when I asked my fellow trainer if he wanted to get rid of the bad feeling he had about the course he had just run, he said yes. So I did exactly what Ray had shown me - just one round and he laughed and said, "It?s not my bloody fault they sent the wrong people".

So, can it really be that easy to change the way you think about something?  Yes, it can!

Anyone have an allergy you don't want?
By Tom Dorzab

If you, or someone you know, are one of the millions of people around the world that suffer with:
  • Irritating, runny hose from seasonal allergies
  • Hives
  • Hay fever
  • Food allergies
  • Reactions to stinging insects
  • Asthma

Or, has a sensitivity to:
  • Environmental toxins
  • Heavy metals
  • Man-made toxins,
  • Etc., etc.
Then I have some exciting news!  Along with Dr. Lees, Berit, my good friend Ron Matthews, (who is another certified Eden Energy Medicine practitioner) and I have a real treat for you. In the October edition of Reflections --

We will invite you to participate in an
Energy Medicine Allergy Elimination Trial.

The process of becoming involved will be simplicity itself.  In the October edition of Reflections a link will be provided that will take you to the sign-up site.   Once registered, you will be provided with the details of the trial, including the specifics of the technique you will be using to eliminate allergies.  You will be asked to rate the intensity of your symptomology.  This measurement is strictly subjective, that is, only you know how you are feeling, and therefore your rating is the one that will be accepted.  This form of rating is referred to as a SUD level - a Specific Unit of Distress - usually on a scale of zero to ten.

After the trial is completed, you will once again be asked to rate the symptom level, and the before and after "scores" will then be compiled.  The trial will be done in the comfort of your own home; so there's no need to travel anywhere.  By now, you may be wondering what the costs are:  The answer is - nothing.  It's just our way of saying Thank You for participating.  Another question you may have is, "What do I have to lose?"  The answer is:  Only your allergy or sensitivity!

Some of you may have questions about the trial, but I ask you to wait until the next newsletter which will contain all the details of the trial and how to register.  For more information regarding allergies, please see below.

Now, does anyone have an allergy you don't want?  If you do, you're in very good company. According to Web MD, 55% of Americans test positive to one or more allergens with an annual cost to healthcare systems and businesses of $7.9 billion. That's not small potatoes! Besides the irritating runny nose that so many people with seasonal allergies have to tolerate every year, there can also be much more dangerous reactions to allergens. Anaphylactic shock can sometimes be the result of an allergic reaction. As most of you know, without emergency medical interventions, anaphylactic shock can result in death. With hives, hay fever, food allergies, reactions to stinging insects and asthma on the rise according to medical experts, allergies are a topic that should be at the top of everyone's list. To say that allergic reactions are on the rise is an understatement.

Allergies are typically defined as the reaction of our immune system to a substance that results in a histamine response such as the characteristic inflammation associated with hay fever. In addition to histamine responses, the exposure to substances can result in a variety of other responses as well. For simplicities' sake, and I like simple, it makes more sense to me to just define any substance that causes any adverse reaction in the body as a sensitivity. It's important to note that all sensitivities are rapidly increasing, not just allergies. If all sensitivities are considered, the $7.9 billion mentioned above won't even begin to cover the cost! Many other countries in the world are also seeing a dramatic increase in sensitivities. What's going on? There have obviously been some dramatic changes either in our environment or in us. I suspect both are true.

In my experience as an energy medicine practitioner, based on energy system assessments, sensitivities and allergies can, and usually do, affect many different energy systems, whether there are obvious symptoms or not. This is because they usually trigger a response from the Triple Warmer meridian. As many of you will remember from my previous articles, the Triple Warmer meridian, among its other duties, is responsible for overseeing the fight or flight response, otherwise known as the stress response. Is all this beginning to sound like a broken record? Well, it should.

There are many reasons people have sensitivities and allergies, and there are also many ways that you can deal with them, as I'm sure those of you that suffer from them know.  Rather than go into those details now, I'd like to focus on our exciting news.  In the October edition of Reflections we will announce an Energy Medicine Allergy Elimination Trial and you're invited to be a participant.  The trial is for anyone that wants to get rid of their sensitivity or allergy.  The only 'cost' to you is a little bit of your time.

As I mentioned above, we are inviting you to participate in the trial, and at no cost to you, and do so, in the comfort of your own home.  That's right; in the comfort of your own home you can be one of the first people to try this never-before-seen energy medicine sensitivity elimination technique.

This technique is not for everyone. If you've grown attached to that allergy or sensitivity that's been following you around and want to keep it then this technique is not for you.  But if you want to free yourself once and for all from the torment of allergies and sensitivities, then you'll definitely want to pay very close attention to next month's newsletter. It's very likely that we will have a simple (remember I like simple) and effective (I'm also big on effective) technique that just about anybody can do. After all, if I can do it. :-)

We're in the process of perfecting a technique that has helped almost everyone we've tried it on and we need your help to finish the process. There have been a few very sensitive individuals that have presented quite a challenge, but in the end, with perseverance and using more advanced techniques, even they have made progress. So what do you have to lose other than your allergies?

Visit this newsletter again next month and we'll give you all the exciting details! I can't wait to see how many of you step up to take control of your allergies! Thank you in advance for all of your help. I'll see you then.

Out of the mouths of babes...

A six-year-old boy told his father he wanted to marry the little girl across the street. The father, being modern and well-schooled in handling children, hid his smile behind his hand.

'That's a serious step,' he said. 'Have you thought it out completely?'
'Yes,' his young son answered. 'We can spend one week in my room and the next in hers. It's right across the street, so I can run home if I get scared of the dark.'

'How about transportation?' the father asked.

'I have my wagon, and we both have our tricycles,' the little boy answered.
The boy had an answer to every question the father raised.

Finally, in exasperation, his dad asked, 'What about babies? When you're married, you're liable to have babies, you know.'

'We've thought about that, too,' the little boy replied. 'We're not going to have babies. Every time she lays an egg, I'm going to step on it!'

The days are getting shorter, the temperatures are cooling slightly and summer is coming to an end soon.  I, for one, am not ready for it to end.  Alex and I have had a very relaxing summer.  Basically we did nothing but relax, take it easy and not do much of anything.  By the time August rolled around, we were getting the hang of doing nothing and were doing it well!

When I say we did "nothing" I really mean it.  We worked during the week and on the weekends we read a number of good books, ate a lot of good food (lots of fruit and salads), took Ty for long walks and took naps.  Sometimes the naps were in the sun, but when it was too hot, we'd go inside and have fans going in every room.  I think I'm beginning to understand what retirement might be like - exactly what we were doing minus the "work during the week part."

For most of the last 33 years (that's how long Alex and I have been together) we would have all sorts of projects on the go.  Stuff like painting the inside and outside of the house (in each house we're lived in), building decks, doing renovations, having a massive flower garden, and a million other things that needed doing.  Not this summer - the only thing I did was plant some flowers in a few large pots in the front and back yard.  To help out, Alex took on the responsibility of watering them.

Now, before you think Alex and I have become totally boring and we need to get a life - we did go and visit our friends down in the States.  They have a gorgeous house on a lake and the area they live in is very beautiful.  Whenever we go down and visit, Tamara and I go shopping.  There's great thrift and good will stores in the area and we always find some wonderful "must have items."  Alex and Michael, of course, do other things - guy things.  What those things are, Tamara and I have never figured out, but the guys seem happy, and that's what counts.

This visit was different.  For starters the temperature was in the 30s (Celsius) or 90s (F).  Plus, we had Ty with us.  We didn't think it was a good idea to put him in a kennel so shortly after losing his best friend Kaylie.  Also, Tamara and Michael were fine with us bringing him along - they also have a doggie so we thought they could play together.  Their dog tried to play with Ty but he wasn't having any of it.  She's older than Ty and it looked like he didn't want to be bossed around by another female as he'd had enough of that with Kaylie.  Besides, there was something much more fun for him to do - chase ducks.

Yup, all he had to do was stroll out the front door, hop and skip down the short path and there was the lake... with lots of ducks.

Ty is a wonderful little doggie except for one quirk.  He loves chasing ducks.  His record, achieved earlier this summer, was 40 minutes.  By that I mean - he spent 40 minutes swimming after ducks one day on our walk!  We actually thought he might drown from exhaustion, but finally we were able to get him to come out, but it was only after the ducks finally got bored with him and flew away.

So, we're now at Tamara and Michael's and Ty is trotting down to the lake and the ducks.  This lake is a lake, not a largish pond like back home, so I was very worried that if he went after them, we'd have to jump into the row boat and go after him.  If we were able to get near enough, how the heck would we get him into the boat?

As I'm having those thoughts, I yelled, "Alex - ducks!"  Alex ran out the door, down the path, leapt into the lake and was lucky to grab the little darling by his tail.  All the ducks were observing this from a safe distance of about 50 feet from Ty.  I swear those ducks looked amused.  Ty on the other hand looked like a drowned rat and not very happy because Alex interfered with his fun.  After that we were vigilant and one of us was always with Ty whenever he went outside.

Ty's little escapade happened the first day we were there. That was enough excitement for one day, and because it was way too hot to do much, we  decided that the rest of our time should be spent in a relaxing way, and preferably indoors... the house has air conditioning, which made it very comfortable.  We ate great food, talked, read, took naps, watched a movie or two, and took Ty for walks in the state parks (there are two parks with beautiful beaches five minutes from their house).  Tamara and I only got in one short shopping expedition and the guys did whatever guys do.  All in all, it was the perfect vacation.

We have one week of summer holidays left before the "back to school" rush begins.  I started thinking that I should do some painting around the house, and the backyard needs some work... all of which sounds like a lot of work.  Maybe I should think about doing it after Labour Day. :-)

I hope you've all had a great summer, and for those of you Down Under - a great winter!

Till next month,
Take care.
