The experience of Hilda Col�n, one of the participants in the first class of the CRI Life Enhancement Program at Urban Health Plan in the South Bronx, New York, is featured in the winter 2011 edition of Canyon Ranch Connection. After learning about the integrative approach to physical activity, healthy eating, and stress management, Hilda lost weight and her doctor told her she could stop using insulin to manage her type 2 diabetes. CRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006).

In the United States, nearly one third of children are either overweight or obese, and over 15 million children and adolescents suffer from mental health problems. During a forum titled "America's Children at Peril: Solving the Child Obesity and Mental Health Epidemics," policymakers and national health leaders came together to help identify the cause of these public health crises and to develop strategies to reverse the trends.

Dr. Kavita PatelKavita K. Patel, M.D., M.S.H.S., serves as health policy program director at New America Foundation and previously held the role of director of policy for the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. Prior to that position, she served as the deputy staff director for the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee under the leadership of Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

Dr. David SatcherDavid Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., FAAFP, FACPM, FACP, 16th Surgeon General of the United States (1998-2001) is founder and director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and Center of Excellence on Health Disparities at the Morehouse School of Medicine. From February 1998 through January 2001, Dr. Satcher served simultaneously in the positions of Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary for Health. He has received over 40 honorary degrees and numerous distinguished honors.
