Call for Nominations for 2010 CRI Prevention Pioneer Award

The CRI Prevention Pioneer Award recognizes and honors individuals and organizations that serve as role models for effective ways to improve wellness, increase prevention, eliminate the scourge of health disparities, and improve health literacy. To nominate an individual or organization, send a 300-wordPrevention Pioneer Award Call for Nominations statement detailing why the nominee should receive the award to cri@canyonranchinstitute.org by September 30, 2010. CRI will make a $500 donation to a 501(c)3 non-profit organization designated by the 2010 Prevention Pioneer.

Celebrate Adult Education and Family Literacy Week:
September 13-19


The U.Adult Education and Family Literacy WeekS. House of Representatives named the week of September 13 Adult Education and Family Literacy Week to raise awareness of the importance of adult education and family literacy. The National Coalition for Literacy is sponsoring several activities in recognition of the week. September 13 through 17, Cynthia Baur, Ph.D. will serve as guest moderator of an online discussion on the National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy. Dr. Baur is the Senior Advisor for Health Literacy, Office of the Associate Director for Communication, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Canyon Ranch Institute recognizes the importance of health literacy, and aims to incorporate health literacy into all of our programs and partnerships.

CRI Helps Sullivan County Residents Improve Their Health

The Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program (CRI LEP) offers residents of Sullivan County, MO, a unique opportunity to improve their health. Funded by a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health and supported by Health Literacy Missouri, the CRI LEP in Sullivan County aims to transfer the best practices of Canyon Ranch to Sullivan County to increase health literacy and to prevent, diagnose, and address chronic diseases through an integrative health model. The CRI LEP in Sullivan County is the first CRI LEP to focus on a rural population. Read More
CRI President Richard H. Carmona Speaks on the Importance of Disease Prevention at the Colorado Health Foundation Symposium

Dr. Richard CarmonaCRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), delivered the keynote address at the Colorado Health Foundation symposium. During his keynote, Dr. Carmona spoke about the long-term value of chronic disease prevention. "Of every dollar spent on health care in the United States, 75 cents goes toward the treatment of chronic diseases, most of which are preventable," said Dr. Carmona. The symposium was attended by over 400 elected officials, policy makers, and leaders from non-profit and health advocacy organizations. Read More

CRI Health Literacy and Research Director Andrew Pleasant Publishes Article on Health Literacy
Encyclopedia of Science & Technology Communication - July 2010

Andrew PleasantAn article by CRI Health Literacy and Research Director Andrew Pleasant, Ph.D., was recently published in the Encyclopedia of Science and Technology Communication. In his article titled "Health Literacy," he explains that nearly 9 out of 10 adults in the United States are below the proficient level in health literacy. Health literacy - that which allows the public and personnel working in all health-related contexts to find, understand, evaluate, communicate, and use information - has always existed, but practitioners have only recently started to research and practice health literacy in both clinical and public health contexts. CRI Partner Time to Talk CARDIO Highlighted as an Effective Method to Increase Health Literacy and Patient Activation
 
Low health literacy is a barrier to receiving quality health care, yet research indicates that patient activation, such as asking questions, may compensate for low health literacy skills. In part seven of the online webinar "Impact Studies in Health Literacy and Patient Activation," Doug Seubert, a nationally recognized speaker on health literacy, highlights CRI partner organization Time to Talk CARDIO as an excellent tool to increase patient activation and address the needs of patients with low health literacy.

Health Literacy Missouri's Dr. Arthur Culbert Honored as Health Care Hero
St. Louis Business Journal - August 27, 2010

Arthrur CulbertArthur Culbert, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Health Literacy Missouri, was named a 2010 Health Care Hero by the St. Louis Business Journal for his efforts to increase the health literacy of Missourians. In 2009, Health Literacy Missouri and the Missouri Foundation for Health awarded a grant to CRI and Sullivan County Memorial Hospital to develop a CRI Life Enhancement Program for residents of Sullivan County, MO. The CRI LEP in Sullivan County aims to transfer the best practices of Canyon Ranch to Sullivan County residents to increase health literacy and to prevent, diagnose, and address chronic disease through an integrative health model.
