CRI Monthly Update November 2010
This month's featured photo is of CRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, Urban Health Plan President and CEO Paloma Izquierdo-Hernandez, M.A., M.P.H., and Urban Health Plan Founder Richard Izquierdo, M.D. Ms. Izquierdo-Hernandez is the recipient of the 2010 Canyon Ranch Institute Prevention Pioneer Award for her work to increase prevention and health literacy in the South Bronx, NY.

Dear Friend of Canyon Ranch Institute,

Americans spend more than $2 trillion on health care annually, but only 2 to 3 percent is spent on prevention. To become a healthier nation and ease our country's economic burden, we must transform the current health care system from one focused primarily on treating disease to one rooted in prevention. Each year, Canyon Ranch Institute honors an individual or organization that is finding effective ways to increase prevention and improve wellness. I'm happy to announce that the 2010 Canyon Ranch Institute Prevention Pioneer Award goes to Paloma Izquierdo-Hernandez, M.A., M.P.H., president and CEO of Urban Health Plan. Click here to learn more about how Ms. Izquierdo-Hernandez is improving the health and well-being of Urban Health Plan's patients and community.

Earlier this week, CRI Health Literacy and Research Director Andrew Pleasant, Ph.D., and I attended the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting and Exposition in Denver to learn and teach about emerging health science and policy issues in an effort to prevent disease and promote wellness. During the conference, which is attended by over 12,000 public health professionals, we were honored to present two award-winning programs: the Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program and Time to Talk CARDIO. We'll highlight our experiences and presentations in the next issue of the CRI Monthly Update.

On behalf of all of us at Canyon Ranch Institute, thank you for your continuing support of our programs that help empower all people to prevent disease and embrace a life of wellness. If you would like to learn more about how you can become involved, please click here or contact me.
