CRI Monthly Update July/Aug 2010

This month's featured photo is from the Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program (CRI LEP) in Cleveland. CRI began collaborating with the Cleveland Clinic in early 2010 to tailor a CRI LEP specifically to the health and wellness opportunities and hopes of young adults in Cleveland.

Dear Friend of Canyon Ranch Institute,

I don't know about you, but I'm reminded every day that when it comes to empowering healthy lifestyles to prevent disease, there are infinite needs and just as infinite possibilities. Here at Canyon Ranch Institute, all of our partnerships are customized to the possibilities and hopes of the people we have the privilege to partner with and learn from. That makes us all stronger.

A great learning experience for me has been the National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship (NCTA), a battle plan I co-edited in 2008 to set specific national goals to improve cancer prevention, recommended screenings and early detection, treatment and navigation, and survivorship. A few days ago, we celebrated the second anniversary of the NCTA with people and organizations committed to meeting the goals of the NCTA. Those goals were set by a distinguished group of nearly 100 collaborators led by four former U.S. Surgeons General, including our own CRI President Dr. Richard H. Carmona. This summer, in our new role as administrative home of the NCTA Community, Canyon Ranch Institute established a Council of Experts to provide insight and counsel in making cancer prevention and survivorship a national priority.

If you or a loved one has been affected by cancer, I hope you will apply for the 2010 CRI LIVESTRONG Fellowship Program Celebrating Life After Cancer, at the Canyon Ranch Life Enhancement Center® in Tucson, AZ, October 24-31. Applications are due August 17, so please take this opportunity to become a part of this amazing program! Also in this issue of the CRI Monthly Update, you'll find an important new report from our partner the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and you can take a survey on the affects of cancer.

You'll also see that we've been busy with the ongoing development of our Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program (CRI LEP) with our partners in Cleveland, the South Bronx, and Sullivan County, Missouri. By improving health literacy through the CRI LEP, we can prevent chronic diseases through culturally relevant approaches that resonate with each community and are truly individualized for each participant.

On behalf of all of us at Canyon Ranch Institute, thank you for your continuing support of our programs that help to empower every person to prevent disease and embrace a life of wellness. If you would like to learn more about us or how you can become involved in any of our partnerships or activities, please click here or contact me.
