In honor of National Public Health Week, all of us at Canyon Ranch Institute want to thank you for your amazing work to meet our shared mission to help educate, inspire, and empower every person to prevent disease and embrace a life of wellness. We're also delighted to update you about our partnerships focused on improving health and well-being - one person and one community at a time. For example, we recently had the privilege of co-hosting the National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship 2010 Workshop: Innovation in the War on Cancer. The one-day Workshop in Washington, D.C. brought together stakeholders from all sectors of society and provided unique perspectives about cancer research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, as well as innovative ideas about how to move forward to close gaps in these key areas. The National Call to Action Community is a group of more than 100 organizations and individuals dedicated to achieving the goals of the NCTA that four U.S. Surgeons General issued in 2008. The National Call to Action Community, in partnership with Canyon Ranch Institute, the American Institute for Cancer Research, Cancer Support Community, C-Change, LIVE STRONG, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), hosted the 2010 Workshop: Innovation in the War on Cancer at the headquarters of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C. The Workshop brought together stakeholders from all sectors of society to evaluate accomplishments and identify next steps in making the continuum of cancer prevention and survivorship a national priority. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), presented the opening keynote address along with Billy Tauzin, president and chief executive officer of PhRMA. CRI Partner the STOP Obesity Alliance Releases Outcomes of Primary Care Roundtable and Survey Results

On March 16, CRI partner the STOP Obesity Alliance at The George Washington University released Improving Obesity Management in Adult Primary Care, a white paper based on outcomes of an expert roundtable that examined innovative approaches to help address obesity in the primary care setting. The paper outlines five areas to explore to improve the treatment of obesity in primary care: · Monitoring weight, health indicators and risk; · Assessing patient motivation; · Defining success; · Increasing integration and care coordination; and · Implementing electronic medical records.
Important results from national surveys conducted by Harris Interactive were also presented at the panel discussion. The surveys gathered insights from primary care physicians and patients about discussions surrounding weight and weight-related health issues. Read More

CRI Executive Director Jennifer Cabe, M.A., spoke at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Conference in Washington D.C. "The Challenge of Chronic Diseases Along the U.S.-Mexico Border." The conference was hosted by the CSIS Americas Program and Global Health Policy Center with the Pan American Health and Education Foundation and the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission. Jennifer's presentation focused on strategies and programs that CRI is developing and evaluating with partners to advance health literacy and improve disease prevention. Read More |

A Call for Collaborative Action against America's Greatest Health Threat

"Medical Ethics Confronts Obesity" is the theme of the April edition of Virtual Mentor, the American Medical Association Journal of Ethics. Editor Fatima Cody Stanford, M.D., M.P.H., explains, "This month's issue examines many of the ethical questions that arise when physicians confront the need to talk to and treat patients who are obese." CRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, authored the op-ed "A Call for Collaborative Action against America's Greatest Health Threat" for the online publication. Dr. Carmona wrote, "As a nation, we have an imperative to immediately and expeditiously address the complex variables that contribute to the health, economic and ethical dilemmas imposed by our nation's obesity epidemic, which we are also exporting to the world."
