National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship

Dear friends, colleagues, and supporters of the National Call to Action on Cancer
Prevention and Survivorship

Leaders from the National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship Community are gathering in Washington, D.C. today to participate in the 2010 Workshop: Innovation in the War on Cancer, a working session designed to catalyze progress to meet the strategies and goals of the National Call to Action.

Many successful milestones have been met since the National Call to Action was issued in 2008 under the leadership of four former U.S. Surgeons General and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong. The National Call to Action outlines four goals that Americans can achieve in order to reduce the risk of developing cancer, improve screening and early detection, improve treatment, and enhance survivorship. These goals are to:
  • Empower healthy lifestyles to prevent cancer
  • Apply what we know about cancer screening and early detection to all people
  • Ensure that all people can navigate through the health care system
  • Provide survivorship care plans and systems of support for all cancer survivors

The National Call to Action Community has made great progress, but there is still much work to be done for the 12 million Americans living with cancer and the 1.4 million Americans who will be diagnosed with cancer this year. The 2010 Workshop promises to advance the national discussion about how to leverage innovation in medicine, strengthen patient advocacy, increase community engagement, and create successful policy in order to advance cancer prevention and improve survivorship. View the complete agenda.

The objectives of the 2010 Workshop are to:

  • Engage stakeholders from all sectors of society to view the continuum of cancer prevention and survivorship as a national priority;
  • Review successful outcomes of individuals and organizations that have adopted strategies to meet the goals of the National Call to Action; and
  • Review gaps and unmet needs in all sectors and identify actionable steps to close these gaps.

The 2010 Workshop is made possible by the American Institute for Cancer Research, Cancer Support Community, Canyon Ranch Institute, C-Change, LIVESTRONG, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). The 2010 Workshop will feature keynote presentations by:

  • Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, president of Canyon Ranch Institute, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006);
  • Billy Tauzin, president and chief executive officer of PhRMA; and
  • Howard Koh, M.D., M.P.H., Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Additional speakers include leaders from the Arizona Cancer Center, Boston Healthcare Associates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The George Washington University Cancer Institute, LIVESTRONG, the National Cancer Institute, and Pfizer. Read speaker bios.
