As we celebrate National Public Health Week 2009, all of us at Canyon Ranch Institute (CRI) are taking a few moments to remember that optimal wellness is a universal goal as well as a very personal journey. At CRI, we embrace the privilege of collaborating with our partners to improve health literacy, increase prevention, and eliminate health disparities.

CRI President Dr. Richard Carmona Posts to New "Weighing In" Blog for STOP Obesity Alliance 
 
CRI partner organization the Strategies to Overcome and 
Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance recently launched a redesigned website that includes a new blog, "Weighing In." It will serve as an open dialogue to connect with people interested in obesity and weight-related health risks, like diabetes and heart disease. In his posting, "The Threat of Obesity: Our Nation's Health, Safety and Security at Risk", CRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), and Health and Wellness Chairperson for the STOP Obesity Alliance, discusses the "often overlooked consequence of the rise in obesity over the past two decades. Obesity impacts our nation's security." CRI and Urban Health Plan Develop Wellness Center
South Bronx, NY

CRI and our partner organization Urban Health Plan (UHP) selected interior design firm S/L/A/M Collaborative to create a wellness center in preparation for the launch of the CRI Life Enhancement Program at UHP. A former multi-purpose room at UHP, which is a community health center serving 27,000 people in the South Bronx, is being redesigned into a wellness center to offer a nurturing space that will support patients' optimal health and well-being. The need for a wellness center at UHP was one outcome of the participatory planning process conducted by CRI and UHP staff and UHP participants. Read More
CRI President Dr. Richard Carmona Joins Four Former U.S. Surgeons General to Discuss America's Health Care System

Five former U.S. Surgeons General, including CRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), met at the Distinguished Lectureship Series at Florida Hospital in Orlando. The Surgeons General emphasized the need to transform the current "sick-care" system from one focused on disease to one based in health and prevention. Millions of Americans do not have access to health care, which results in higher health disparities, disability, and death from preventable diseases. Read More
North Carolina Joins Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease

North Carolina has joined CRI partner organization the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease (PFCD) as one of the largest states in the battle to prevent and treat chronic disease. CRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), and national chairperson of PFCD, congratulated North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue and North Carolina leaders on their dedication to health and prevention. CRI Hosts Keynote Presentation at the 2009 Integrated Care Summit

CRI hosted the keynote presentation at the 2009 Integrated Care Summit in Austin, Texas. CRI Partnerships and Policies Director Christine Sardo, M.P.H., R.D., provided opening remarks and introduced Christine Ferguson, J.D., director of CRI partner organization Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance, and Louise Milone, administrator of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Health Care Access Trust. SEIU is a member of the STOP Obesity Alliance Steering Committee. Read More
