CRI President Dr. Richard Carmona Addresses Health Disparities and Chronic Disease in Keynote Speech at the A. Philip Randolph Institute National Education Conference

Dr. Carmona addressed the need for an increased focus on prevention of chronic disease and public participation in creating solutions in order to reduce long-standing health disparities. "We need you to help us create a cultural transformation from a 'sick care' system to one rooted in health and prevention," Dr. Carmona told the enthusiastic and receptive audience. CRI Partner Time to Talk CARDIO Launches in Ohio
Dublin, OH
Time to Talk CARDIO, a new program to help patients and health care professionals make the most of their conversations about heart health by building communication skills, launched at the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians Members Assembly in Dublin, Ohio. The Ohio launch follows the successes of the Time to Talk CARDIO presentations earlier this year in New Jersey and Mississippi. CRI President Dr. Richard Carmona Explains H1N1 Flu and Health Care Reform Fox Business
 CRI President Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, was featured on the FOX Business show Money for Breakfast. Dr. Carmona was initially joined by other panelists on the cable news talk show to discuss the H1N1 flu virus. In a later segment that same morning, Dr. Carmona discussed the current efforts to reform the health care system. Read More |

CRI Health Literacy and Communication Director Andrew Pleasant, Ph.D., was featured in a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publication, "What We Know About" that focuses on health literacy. Dr. Pleasant was quoted on the current state of health literacy in the U.S. population and provided consultation on the document's overall content. Read More |
CRI President Dr. Richard Carmona Delivers Opening Remarks at Health Affairs Conference

Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, president of Canyon Ranch Institute and C. Everett Koop, M.D., Sc.D., 13th Surgeon General of the United States, provided opening remarks at "Fact vs. Fiction: Key Issues in Health Reform." This one-day conference was hosted by the journal Health Affairs. In his remarks, Dr. Carmona commented on the importance of reforming the U.S. health care system. Healthy Eating on a Budget

Advice from CRI Partnerships and Policies Director Christine Sardo, M.P.H., R.D., was highlighted in The Wellness Community Greater Cleveland. Christine explained that healthy eating on a budget is all about balance. Along with providing a list of healthy, inexpensive grocery items, she said, "Planning and preparing your own meals takes more time and energy, but saves money and offers greater nutritional value." CRI Health Literacy and Communication Director Promotes Health Literacy Awareness along U.S.-Mexico Border Nogales, AZ
Andrew Pleasant, Ph.D., CRI health literacy and communication director, gave a health literacy presentation to members of the Santa Cruz County Adolescent Wellness Network on July 20, 2009 in Nogales, AZ. The project is supported by the State Office of Rural Health and hopes to raise the health literacy awareness and wellness levels of youth in Santa Cruz County. Santa Cruz County and the City of Nogales are located along the U.S.-Mexico border in Southern Arizona. The region is primarily composed of rural, low-income, traditionally medically underserved Hispanic/Latino communities.
