Ingels, Sugar Creek Host Walk to School Day Events
Ingels Elementary (Hickman Mills) and Sugar Creek (Independence) Caring Communities sites both hosted International Walk to School Day on Oct. 6.
Ingels Caring Communities helped City of Kansas City and Hickman Mills School District leaders kick-off the new Active Living Kansas City initiative.
To inaugurate the physical activity initiative, students and their families and faculty and staff walked to school alongside local civic leaders. The Royals' mascot, Slugger, and the Chiefs' KC Wolf were on hand to cheer on the walkers. All four local TV stations covered the event. A video of the event can be viewed here.
The Ingels Caring Communities Site Council and Angela Myres, Site Coordinator, were instrumental in making preparations for the ceremonial kick-off for Active Living Kansas City.
The Site Council hosted a parent information evening about the health initiative. LINC also provided demographic information about neighborhoods and potential routes for parents to walk to school with their children.
The City of Kansas City, Mo., together with the Hickman Mills School District, LINC and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, developed Active Living Kansas City to encourage healthier eating and the addition of more regular physical activity into daily routines.
Sugar Creek Caring Communities also participated in International Walk to School Day, providing support for the PTA's celebration. Site Coordinator Marqus Rose expressed his appreciation for the community's response, "Everyone made Walk to School Day a big deal."
Sugar Creek Mayor Stan Salva was an enthusiastic promoter for the event and is really interested in the physical activity emphasis of the day.
The school has also been focusing on traffic safety around the school.
