Greetings!

This is the October 15th edition of a weekly report to the LINC Commission.  Our board is deeply interested in our work and wanted to learn about -- and share with others -- the great things LINC is helping to accomplish.

LINC site featured in KC Star for Lights On Afterschool

Phillips Caring Communities was featured in an article about Lights On Afterschool in the Kansas City Star on Wednesday, Oct. 13. The article titled "Seeing the Value in Schools" focused on LINC's  dedication to quality afterschool care as well as the efforts for community outreach citing efforts such as food pantries, utility assistance, and life skills classes.

LINC will host over 40 celebrations across the seven school districts it serves as part of the nation-wide Lights On Afterschool initiative.  To find an event near you visit www.kclinc.org/lightson or search by region at www.afterschoolalliance.org

Bullying prevention is focus at Burke, Korte

Burke Caring Communities in the Hickman Mills School District hosted a special presentation for parents about bullying on Oct. 5. Burke's school counselor, Jennifer Swenson-Kaiser, spoke with adults about Bullying Prevention and Awareness. During her presentation to parents, students participated in age-appropriate awareness activities.

Korte Caring Communities in the Independence School District is addressing bullying at two separate events. Monday, Oct. 18, students from William Chrisman High School will visit Korte to offer their interactive musical, Stomp Out Bullying. Stomp, in its 7th year of production, is one activity of the Association for Chrisman Excellence (ACE) Club.

Korte's Lights On Afterschool theme this year continues the bullying prevention focus. Families are invited to enjoy the fun Carnival games, but also take time out for a presentation by Gary Hillebrand, Prevention Specialist with Preferred Family Healthcare. Hillebrand will address "Stomping Out Bullying" with parents and students. Students will participate in a survey about bullying behaviors. The results will be presented to the Site Council at their next meeting. The Lights on Afterschool Stomping Out Bullying Together activities at Korte are set for Thursday, Oct. 21, 4-6 p.m.

LINC distributes "Halloween Safety Tips" flyer at schools

Halloween Safety Tips HeadingHalloween can be a fun experience for children of all ages.  This year LINC wants to be sure the fun is shared by both children and their parents.

The excitement of dressing up often distracts from several important safety steps, such as making sure costume material is bright enough to be seen by cars, and that any masks aren't blocking a child's line of sight.  These tips and more can be found on LINC's list of Halloween Safety Tips.

LINC is making an effort to ensure the safety of as many children as possible by distributing these lists at many area Caring Communities sites.

The tips can be downloaded in both English and Spanish at www.kclinc.org.

Ingels, Sugar Creek Host Walk to School Day Events

Ingels Elementary (Hickman Mills) and Sugar Creek (Independence) Caring Communities sites both hosted International Walk to School Day on Oct. 6.

Ingels Caring Communities helped City of Kansas City and Hickman Mills School District leaders kick-off the new Active Living Kansas City initiative.

To inaugurate the physical activity initiative, students and their families and faculty and staff walked to school alongside local civic leaders. The Royals' mascot, Slugger, and the Chiefs' KC Wolf were on hand to cheer on the walkers. All four local TV stations covered the event. A video of the event can be viewed here.

The Ingels Caring Communities Site Council and Angela Myres, Site Coordinator, were instrumental in making preparations for the ceremonial kick-off for Active Living Kansas City.

The Site Council hosted a parent information evening about the health initiative. LINC also provided demographic information about neighborhoods and potential routes for parents to walk to school with their children.

The City of Kansas City, Mo., together with the Hickman Mills School District, LINC and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, developed Active Living Kansas City to encourage healthier eating and the addition of more regular physical activity into daily routines.

Sugar Creek Caring Communities also participated in International Walk to School Day, providing support for the PTA's celebration. Site Coordinator Marqus Rose expressed his appreciation for the community's response, "Everyone made Walk to School Day a big deal."

Sugar Creek Mayor Stan Salva was an enthusiastic promoter for the event and is really interested in the physical activity emphasis of the day.

The school has also been focusing on traffic safety around the school.

Southeast Newsletter now available

The Southeast Caring Communities Newsletter for October 2010 is now available at monthly neighborhood meetings, the Southeast Caring Communities meetings, and on the LINC website.

The neighborhood is encouraged to learn about the planning process and to help shape the strategies and participate in their implementation. Information on the Site Plan will be presented at monthly neighborhood meetings and the neighborhood coalition meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Gladstone Caring Communities receives donation from Wal-Mart

While shopping for program supplies Gladstone Site Coordinator Gladstone WalMart DonationRay Thomas was offered a deal he couldn't refuse - over $4,000 worth of school supplies to be donated by Wal-Mart to his school. A store manager inquired about LINC's programming, and  upon discovering LINC's role in schools, offered the donation.

Over 30 boxes of new school supplies were donated in an effort to help the school and clear storage space. Gladstone building manager Steve Barnes volunteered his time and truck to pick up the supplies and deliver them to the school.  Supplies have been made available to teachers and students at Gladstone Elementary.

October LINC Commission Meeting set for Oct. 18

The October LINC Commission meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 18 from 4-6 pm at the Kauffman Foundation.

The public is invited.
