LINC sites begin planning for Lights on After School
LINC helps keep the lights on after school so that children can have a safe place to learn and enjoy enrichment activities and parents can work.
Every year LINC participates in the national Lights On Afterschool celebration. This year mark your calendars for Thursday, Oct. 21. LINC expects to hold 30 or more events across the community on the same evening. We hope you will be able to attend one of the events.
Look for more details in coming weeks. Information about events will be continually updated on our website at www.kclinc.org/lightson. This is one of LINC's major community outreach efforts.
The national celebration is organized by the Afterschool Alliance, www.afterschoolalliance.org.

LINC and partners to hold neighborhood clean-up events
LINC is partnering with several Kansas City neighborhoods to organize clean-ups this fall.
LINC is supporting a Sept. 25th clean-up at Smith-Hale College Preparatory 6/7 Center, 8925 Longview Rd. The event is open to all Hickman Mills School District residents, and is sponsored in partnership with the homes associations of Ruskin Heights/Ruskin Village, Ruskin Hills, Kirkside and Stratford, as well as St. Matthew's CCO, Ruskin Neighborhoods CDC, Keep Kansas City Beautiful, and Hickman Mills School District.
Residents are invited to bring the following items for disposal/collection: tires and rims, old medicine, antifreeze, batteries, oil, paint, and items for shredding. Big Brothers Big Sisters will be collecting clothing and small appliances, and Community Assistance Council will be collecting non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, personal care products and cash donations.
Smith-Hale recently became a LINC Caring Communities site, and is one of nine LINC sites in Hickman Mills.
LINC is also supporting Oct. 2nd clean-ups in partnership with the Fox Town East Neighborhood Association and the Noble Neighborhood Association. Both neighborhoods are served by the Southeast Caring Communities Neighborhood Resource Center.

Ingels Elementary works on walking program
Ingels Elementary in the Hickman Mills School District is an example of how LINC Caring Communities sites are finding partners and opportunity to promote better fitness for children and families.
Ingels has been selected as a site for the community initiative Active Living KC. The initiative encourages healthy lifestyles by putting regular physical activity back into our daily routines and encouraging healthy eating. This includes promoting walking and biking, encouraging good nutrition and reviewing school and city policies to encourage more active lifestyles.
Partners include several City of Kansas City, Mo. departments (public works, health, planning), the Hickman Mills School District, Jackson County Sheriff's Department and LINC. An Oct. 6th media conference is planned. This coincides with the International Walk to School Day.
Angela Myres is the Ingels site coordinator.
