Greetings!

This is the September 10th edition of a weekly report to the LINC Commission.  Our board is deeply interested in our work and wanted to learn about -- and share with others -- the great things LINC is helping to accomplish.
Progress continues on South Kansas City health clinic

The new Swope Health South Clinic continues to make progress as the opening slated for October 2010 quickly approaches.  The clinic will be located at 8821 Troost Ave. and will serve families of the south Kansas City area.

The process started in November 2009, with several LINC partners, including the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City, Swope Health Services and the Kansas City Mo. Health Department, working diligently to make the new clinic possible.

In July, Swope Health Services was awarded a grant of $125,000 from the Missouri Primary Care Association to use on infrastructure needs.  By August all permits had been approved and renovations were begun.

LINC has submitted a second request for funding from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City for the next two years of clinic operation.  Swope is committed to having the clinic sustainable after three years of operation.
LINC holds employee health fair

LINC will hold its first-ever Employee Health Fair on Friday, Sept. 10, at the Gregg Center in Kansas City.

All full- and part-time LINC employees will be able to participate in multiple health screenings including healthy heart, lipids, and glucose, and will also have access to information about health problems such as weight, smoking cessation, cancer and asthma.

Over 70 employees signed up to participate.
LINC Commissioner to present book about bullying

LINC Commissioner SuEllen Fried will present her book, Banishing Bullying Behavior, which she wrote with Blanche Sosland, on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 6:30 p.m., at the Kansas City Public Library Plaza Branch, 4801 Main Street. The presentation will cover their work on a strategy to reduce the pain, rage and revenge cycle of bullying.

The core of their book is the Student Empowerment Session which has been crafted and refined for 15 years. This powerful system of questions has effected dramatic changes in children's insights about their behavior. Their techniques are developed from hands-on interaction with educators, parents and students. The book also explores cyber bullying, "mean girls," and parents who refuse to accept that their children are bullies.

Copies of Banishing Bullying Behavior will be available for sale and the authors will sign copies purchased during the event.

A 6 p.m. reception precedes the event.  Admission is free but attendees are required to RSVP. Call (816) 701-3407 or register on-line.
Grandview LINC sites promote health and safety

Grandview Caring Communities sites will be participating in "Safety Street," a program aimed at teaching students the importance of being healthy and safe. It is a free program provided by the Kansas City, Mo. Health Department.

The interactive Safety Street curriculum is designed to prevent injury and promote safety. Beginning this month the Belvidere, Butcher-Green, and Martin City sites will participate in classes on proper hand washing techniques, transportation safety, fire safety and calling 9-1-1, among other topics.

Another Health Department program, Maternal and Child Health, educates students ages 13-18 on the importance of healthy relationships.  Healthy relationship development can reduce violence in and around school as well as make classrooms more manageable and support better learning and increased student attendance.  Martin City 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will participate.
"Ready in 3" preparedness program launched

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has launched its "Ready in 3" program in recognition of National Preparedness Month in September.

The program encourages families to prepare for emergencies with three simple steps.  First, create a plan that the family will follow.  Second, prepare a kit of food, water, battery-operated radio, and other essential items and keep it in a safe place.  Finally, when an emergency happens, listen for information and instruction from local officials.

For more information visit the DHSS website or call 573-526-4768.  A poster is available to download on the LINC website.
