Kansas City, Mo. School Board approves LINC contract
The Kansas City, Mo. School Board approved a new contract with LINC at its August 11th regular school board meeting. The contract is for the 2010-11 academic year. LINC will be present with a full-time site coordinator in almost every elementary school in the district. The core service will be an after-school program with the expectation to organize broader services and partnerships that are part of LINC's Caring Communities "community schools" approach. This is an expanded LINC presence in the district. This past school year, LINC provided an after-school program but not at all sites where LINC had a site coordinator. Additional frontline staff are being recruited and trained, and preparations are under way for schools' opening on Aug. 30. LINC will charge the same rates that it does in other districts for its after-school program: $25 registration fee, no charge if free lunch, $5 weekly fee if reduced and $15 for full pay. There is a $30 maximum charge per family regardless of the number of children attending. A list of KCMSD schools LINC will be serving is on the website at www.kclinc.org/kcmsd. |
Your move: LINC Chess summer camp "best ever"
Students from various LINC Before and After School programs came together for the annual Chess Summer Camp, Aug. 2-6, hosted at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Campers were divided by skill level into two sessions, beginners in the morning and advanced players in the afternoon, but most students played for the whole day - eight straight hours of chess! Students used computers, played in round-robin tournaments, and challenged fellow campers. Volunteer coaches were on hand to analyze games and suggest improvements. On the last day, two chess masters played simultaneously against all of the campers, which was exciting for both the students and the masters. Dale Lombard, director of the LINC Chess program, said this year's camp was the "best camp LINC has ever had." Pictures from the camp can be seen on the LINC Chess Facebook page. Also look for the video debut of LINC Chess student Maddy - at age eight she was the youngest advanced-level player at camp. The LINC Chess Academy, which teaches chess to parents and interested adults, starts on Sept. 8th at the Bluford Library. The LINC chess initiative now has its own Facebook page which as of Friday had 64 followers and lots of interest. |

New LINC site in Hickman Mills
LINC is expanding its presence in the Hickman Mills School District to include Smith-Hale Middle School.
This is first time LINC has located a Caring Communities site coordinator in a Hickman Mills middle school. The addition means LINC will be serving nine schools in Hickman Mills - eight elementary school plus the middle school.
LINC will work to develop a quality afterschool program for Smith-Hale middle school students. The school has approximately 675 students.
Angie McConico is the principal. NicKia McMurtrey will be the LINC Caring Communities site coordinator.
The LINC expansion is possible through a state school improvement grant Hickman Mills received. The grant is federal education funding provided to states to improve student achievement at eligible schools.

Urban Rangers team up with LINC
Six houses in the Town Fork Creek and SPENA neighborhoods have a fresh coat of paint thanks to efforts led by the LINC Southeast Caring Communities Neighborhood Resource Center (SECC), Urban Rangers and the City of Kansas City.
A canvass of the neighborhoods by Lloyd Cooper and Larry Lillis found citizens who would benefit from the city's paint program. Dona Stephenson of the SECC assisted with the completion of applications and worked with the City to ensure the applications were processed.
City staff provided inspections and vouchers quickly to ensure completion of the projects before the end of the nine-week Urban Rangers program.
To learn more about the Urban Rangers, visit www.urckc.org. A slideshow is available on the SECC's website at www.kclinc.org/southeast.
