Crystall Balls, Tarot Cards, or 3-D Visualization - What Will the Future Look Like?
As the economy slowly recovers, many are wondering what the future will hold and how their community will grow and change in the coming years. Will a firestorm of new development occur like it did in past decades? Or, will growth happen more slowly? Will there be care and concern for the natural environment and for the "heart and soul" of each community and its residents?
Whether it's a greenfield, infill, redevelopment, or public improvement project, stakeholders will continue to ask "what will it look like?" In the context of community planning, this desire to see the future will always remain. When this question arises, it is best to address it head-on and help stakeholders visualize the proposed project through the use of visual aides.
A commonly used method is to prepare a Visual Resource Analysis. This analysis can take many forms - and include many types of visual aides, including 3-D photographic simulations, sketches, artist renderings, and artificial lighting exhibits studying sky glow, glare, and/or spill light. The key is to determine which visual aides will be most effective for the particular project, as well as satisfy any visual quality analysis criteria as may be required by federal, state, or local environmental compliance laws. Selecting exhibit types that can double as marketing and promotional materials should also be considered.
