Reach Out and Read Carolinas held the first annual Literacy Summit for programs across the region in the Spring of 2011.  It was a wonderful day of training, professional development, networking, and the sharing of best practices for our programs.  We thank our attendees and sponsors for making the day so successful, and we look forward to working with even more champions in 2012.  The date for the 2012 Literacy Summit will be announced soon, so save the date, and we look forward to seeing you then!

Dr. David Tayloe

In July, Dr. David Tayloe, Medical Director for Reach Out and Read North Carolina, was a presenter at the NC Chamber of Commerce Education Summit.  The Summit drew attendees from both the education and business sectors for a day of discussions around the importance of investing in education in the state.  Building and sustaining strong education and workforce development systems that are effective, agile, accountable, and continually produce a competitive, world-class workforce is a top priority for the Chamber. The summit engaged business leaders in a discussion of the role they can play in ensuring the state's students are well-prepared for the jobs of tomorrow.  We were proud to be a part of this important day, and were thrilled to be able to share the Reach Out and Read program model as an essential component of the education continuum in North Carolina.

Congratulations to Washington Pediatrics in Washington, NC for their hard work in raising $2500 for their program to purchase books in a very creative way!  This site participated in a local "Dancing with the Stars" competition and the grand prize was $2500 to a charity of their choice - and this Reach Out and Read Site was chosen!  What a great way to support your program, keep on dancing, Washington Peds!
