One Client Says . . . |
"This workshop came at the right time and place in my relationship with my children. It opened my eyes to the reality of how negatively we were interacting with each other. It forced me to really pay attention to how I listen, respond and support my children. Very positive and uplifting experience for me."

Greetings!
Tiny bundle of joy home from the hospital. Her first words. Kindergarten and PTA bake sales. Isn't being a parent the grandest thing in the whole world? Oh my, you are soooo proud! Then, one evening you tuck her in, as usual. The next morning, out of your daughter's bedroom slinks a complete stranger! You know from the moment you say, "Good Morning," and she barks back, "WHATEVER!" that something is seriously amiss. This person scowling in front of you is wearing your daughter's pj bottoms, the ones embroidered with little pink hearts, but the matching top has been replaced by a ripped-and-frayed-at-the-edges black t-shirt emblazoned with scull & crossbones and a few words I can't repeat here. Where did that shirt come from? But, more importantly, WHERE IS YOUR DAUGHTER? Could this be an alien creature a la Invasion of the Body Snatchers! No, this is your daughter - eek! - and she has become a TEENAGER or maybe even a 'TWEENAGER! What to do now? You had been so comfortable and competent in your previous role. You had taught her how to count to ten, inspired her love of reading with nightly bedtime stories, arranged play dates and made sure she had all her school supplies. And, in return, you got lots of hugs and kisses and "I love you, Mommy!" But now during the pre-teen and teenage years, your good words and deeds are met with scowls, shrugs, "You don't understand!" and "You don't know what you're talking about!" In other words, "YOU'RE FIRED!" So, what do you do when issued a pink slip from your teenager? When the algebra homework and science experiments are beyond your level of expertise? When she begins making arrangements on her own to meet friends at the mall? When your child begins managing her own life? I've heard a lot of parents say, "Once they hit the teenage years, your job is done. You've taught them all you can. Now it's up to them." But, I say our teens need us more than ever during these tumultuous years as they struggle to find themselves and their place in adult society. So, no matter how desperately she seems to be trying to set herself free, don't abandon your teen or your standards and values. However, do take a look at what she needs from you now: to see the world from her point of view and to respect that view, to really listen and understand, to appreciate her uniqueness and to offer her support as she wants it, and to encourage her in new levels of responsibility and independence. The result will be a healthy relationship, one on which she can lean and find guidance as she explores the world's opportunities and temptations. So, keep connected, keep communicating and enjoy this new phase of your relationship!
