The ABC's of Positive Partnerships |
In light of the upcoming Empowered Couples Workshop, my mind has been on positive loving partnerships and what makes them stick. So, with many thanks to my clients, as well as my husband, I offer you the following . . .
Accept your partner the way he/she is. Begin each day anew. Communicate positively and effectively. Develop your own traditions. Encourage your partner to be the best. We all need cheering on. Forgive. It paves the way to be forgiven. Give love freely, no strings attached. Hold your partner in high esteem. Inject joy into your moments together. Join your partner in an activity of his/her choosing. Keep it honest, not brutally, but with tact and sensitivity. Live in the present. Hanging on to past resentments is like dropping anchor and revving the motor at the same time. Mean what you say and choose your words carefully. Negotiate. There's no room for 'my way only' in positive relationships. Open the door to new experiences and support each other's opportunities for personal growth. Pay attention. Be conscious of your words and actions. Determine if they are moving you closer to your partner or farther away from your partner. Quell your fears about what might happen in the future; enjoy today - it'll soon be over.
Respect your partner. He/she deserves it as much as anyone else. Speak kindly of your partner to others. Tell each other what you want. Don't expect your partner to be able to read your mind. Understand your partner. See the world from his/her perspective. View the world and your partnership through positive lenses. Find reasons to be grateful for your relationship. Watch for the loving kindnesses offered by your partner; share with him/her how much you appreciate these kindnesses. 'Xclaim your love for each other through your deeds, gifts, words, time and touch. Yield. Consider which is more important, winning the argument or winning the relationship. Zero in on your vision for the future - then make it happen!
