Study: Increased Dementia in Ex-Players
NFL Retirees Have More Memory-Related, Less Heart-Related Disease Than Population

A study commissioned by the NFL to assess the health and well-being of retired players found that they reported being diagnosed with dementia and other memory-related diseases at a rate significantly higher than that of the general population.

The study also found a greatly increased rate of arthritis being reported by the former NFL players but found reduced rates of diabetes, heart attacks and strokes.

High doses of Vitamin D reduces risk of falls by elderly

A daily supplement of vitamin D at a dose of 700-1000 IU reduces the risk of falling among older people by 19% according to a study published on bmj.com today. But a dose of less than 700 IU per day has no effect.  IU is an international unit of measurement for vitamins and other biologically active substances.  Each year, one in three people aged 65 and older experience at least one fall, with around 6% resulting in a fracture. Fall prevention has therefore become a public health goal especially as the older segment of the population grows.  Several trials have shown that vitamin D improves strength and balance among older people, while others have found no significant effect on the risk of falling.

Conflict Of Interest For AARP In Health Bill Debate?
Whenever Washington considers changes in health care or Social Security, one of the main players is the senior citizens lobby AARP.

The organization's size makes it hard to miss: "One out of every two people over age 50 is an AARP member," says David Certner, who directs AARP's lobbying operation. That comes to 40 million members, he says, half of them 65 or older.

AARP, which offers several kinds of AARP-branded health insurance, supports the changes proposed in Congress right now.

Number of Social Security beneficiaries jumps by 19%

The number of retired workers who began collecting Social Security benefits jumped by a record 19% in the 2009 fiscal year that ended Wednesday as aging Baby Boomers and the unemployed chose to retire early.  More than 2.6 million retired workers entered the Social Security system, up from 2.2 million in fiscal 2008. That's a much bigger increase than during past recessions.  "There are just not enough jobs for older people," says Richard Johnson, senior fellow at the non-partisan Urban Institute. "They have no choice but to go on Social Security."  The number of disabled workers receiving first-time benefits also soared to nearly 1 million, an increase of 100,000 over the previous year, according to Social Security Administration records.  Those two factors are putting new pressure on Social Security's finances. The program paid out $6 billion more in August than it took in. It's projected to run in the red for the next two years before returning to a surplus in 2012.

MEDICARE ANNUAL ENROLLMENT STARTS NOVEMBER 15, 2009: THINK CAREFULLY ABOUT COVERAGE AND OPTIONS

The Annual Coordinated Election Period for Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D drug coverage starts November 15, 2009 and goes through December 31, 2009.  During this period, Medicare beneficiaries who do not have a Part D plan can enroll in one, and those who do have Part D coverage can change plans. Beneficiaries can also return to traditional Medicare from a Medicare Advantage plan, enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, or change Medicare Advantage plans. Beneficiaries who take no action will remain in their current plan, with some exceptions for those who receive the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) or who are in plans that are terminating their Medicare contract.[1]  However, since Part D plans can change their formularies (list of covered drugs), tiers, utilization management tools, exceptions and appeals processes, and other aspects of their Part D plans, and Medicare Advantage plans can change their entire benefit package and provider network, even beneficiaries who were satisfied with their plan in 2009 need to review their options for 2010.
