SOCIAL SECURITY:
NO COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT
MEDICARE:
HIGHER PREMIUMS FOR SOME

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced that there is not likely to be a cost of living adjustment (COLA) for recipients of Social Security benefits in 2010.  The COLA is an increase to help Social Security beneficiaries keep pace with the rise in inflation.  Although the COLA is not a raise, many Social Security recipients think of it as such.

There will likely be no COLA in 2010 because there has been no increase in inflation thus far during the tracking period.  While the lack of a COLA for 2010 may seem unfair to many, the SSA announcement is in keeping with the statutory calculation of the COLA.  And with the current state of the economy, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) predicts that there will be no COLA until 2012 and then only a modest one.

Increasingly, seniors realizing nest egg in life insurance policies

Seniors battered by the tough economy are selling their life insurance policies to replenish their retirement nest eggs. Unlike younger investors, older adults may not have the time to wait for the market to recover all of their losses, so they're turning to this previously overlooked asset to see whether they should sell it and use the money to pay medical bills or other expenses.

Is Retirement Different for Women?

Some strides have been made toward gender equality since women won the right to vote in 1920. But men and women aren't exactly equal when it comes to retirement.

Women are more likely than men to spend their golden years in poverty. According to a report from the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement, more than one in 10 women in retirement live on less than $10,000 a year.
