Health Care Fraud:
It's Everyone's Business

Health care fraud causes consumers major financial problems. The most recent estimate is that consumers lose more than $10 billion each year to health care fraud, but it is not just about losing money - lives are at stake. Health care fraud can make you sick or hurt you. From unsafe drugs sold on the Internet as a "cure" for cancer, to wheelchair offers that try to bilk consumers out of millions of dollars for unneeded equipment, health care fraud is everyone's concern.

Budget Cuts Could Slow
Senior Home Care Enrollment

The two-year Ohio state budget approved this week will cut about $30-million from the Passport Medicaid Waiver program, which provides nursing home level care to seniors in their own homes, day care or assisted-living centers.  "Administering medicine, they also can do home chores.  It can include nutrition services, transportation...," says Karla Warren, Director of Communications with the Ohio Department of Aging.

The program served 40,000 seniors in 2008.  Warren says the cuts won't affect services for people already on Passport or receiving home care, but it will mean fewer seniors can sign up.  "Enrollment will just be at a slower pace.  Unfortunately, these are very difficult economic times," says Warren.

Three Generations Bound by Caring Benefits Ease the Squeeze of Being Sandwiched in the Middle

Mary's afternoons are predictably unpredictable. This afternoon, she has to leave work a little early to take her son to ball practice. On the way there, she'll pick up her daughter from a friend's house. Afterwards, she'll stop at the pharmacy to pick up her dad's prescriptions, then to the store to get the few groceries he needs. After dropping off dad's stuff and doing a little cleaning for him, she makes it home with the kids, fixes dinner and tries to relax with her husband without thinking about the extra effort she'll have to put in tomorrow at work to make up for leaving early today.

Does any of this sound familiar? It might if yours is one of the estimated 9.4 million American families with both children and elders who depend on the generation between them for care and support. This "sandwich generation" is a relatively recent phenomenon in a society that, for decades, has stressed that young adults leave home as soon as possible and get as far away from their parents as possible to raise their own families. But today, the older generation is living longer, more active lives, and many families are seeing the benefits of maintaining ties and blending the generations.
