Specializing in Elder Law

Dear Friend,
The Boy Scout motto is "be prepared"  and as the winter weather continues, we can observe the birds and other
critters storing up what they will need for the duration...to be prepared.   We have the privilege of helping our  clients and yours by helping them
become prepared for the duration of their care needs and financial needs in the winter season of their life.

We hope you will seriously consider your role in helping the seniors of our community access the very best in legal, financial and care services through programs
like Life Care Planning.  We want to refer to the best service providers in our community as we develop Life Care Plans for our clients.

Our goal is to share useful information and updates in elder law and elder services.  We would like to hear from you!   Take a moment  to offer your suggestions, questions, or
helpful information by contacting us at info@elderlawcincinnati.com.

We look forward to communicating with you!

Social Security's Monthly Information: Medicare Part B

If your clients are eligible for Medicare Part B medical insurance, but they didn't sign up for it when they first became eligible for Medicare, they have another opportunity to apply.  Open season for Medicare Part B runs from January 1 until March 31, 2009.  Better to act early than late - if they miss the deadline, they will have to wait until 2010 to apply.

Medicare Part B covers some medical expenses not covered by Medicare Part A (hospital insurance), such as doctors' fees, outpatient hospital visits, and other medical services and supplies.

When individuals first become eligible for hospital insurance (Part A), you have an initial enrollment period of seven-months in which to sign up for medical insurance (Part B).  After that, you have to pay a higher premium - unless the reason you declined Part B was because you were covered through an employer's group health plan or a group health plan based on a spouse's employment.

You are given another opportunity to enroll in Part B during the general enrollment period, from January 1 to March 31 of each year.  But each 12-month period that you are eligible for Medicare Part B and do not sign up, the amount of your monthly premium increases by 10 percent.

Medicare is made up of four parts:
Hospital insurance (Part A) that helps pay for inpatient care in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (following a hospital stay), some home health care and hospice care; Medical insurance (Part B) that helps pay for doctors' services and many other medical services and supplies that are not covered by hospital insurance;
Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are available in many areas.  People with Medicare Parts A and B can choose to receive all of their health care services through one of these provider organizations under Part C; and
Prescription drug coverage (Part D) that helps pay for prescription medications.

In addition, some people with limited income and resources may qualify for extra help to pay for the costs - monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-pays - related to their Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D).

For information about extra help, go to  www.socialsecurity.gov/prescriptionhelp.

Medicaid and Medicare Fact Sheets Available

The Kaiser Family Foundation has updated two publications that explain the role of Medicaid and Medicare in providing health coverage to more than 90 million Americans. Medicaid: A Primer explains how the program is structured, who it covers, what services it provides and how much it costs. Medicare: A Primer looks at covered benefits and copayments and the program's overall costs. It also includes tables showing the number of Medicare beneficiaries in each state.  A new AARP fact sheet addresses common misconceptions about Medicaid, such as anyone who is poor can receive Medicaid and people who save for their retirement years will not need to rely on Medicaid for long-term care.

It's Not Just For Elders Anymore
Keller Moderates Class For OLLI Program

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Cincinnati, or OLLI, is one of the oldest, largest, and most successful programs for active adults in the U.S. - founded, staffed and taught by volunteers, with the support of a small office staff.

OLLI offers on average 100 courses each quarter led by expert teachers in a relaxed, informal environment - and no need to worry about tests or grades.
Classes meet at UC's main campus, Raymond Walters College, Adath Israel and other convenient suburban locations; they are open to everyone aged fifty and above.

Dennison Keller will be moderating Elder Law: It's Not Just for Elders Anymore beginning Thursday, January 22.  Mr. Keller will focus on the options and education available to families who face a long term care journey.  Participants will learn the basics of Medicaid and Veterans Benefits qualification; why trusts are not just for the Trumps; the aftermath of an Alzheimer's diagnosis; Council on Aging services, and a new holistic approach to Elder Law that seeks to protect not only finances, but quality of life.

For more information on the OLLI classes offered, registration information and course descriptions, go to OLLI Program thru UC.
