Dear Friend,
As we come to a time to celebrate the many things we are thankful for, we are reminded of the many professionals like you who have chosen to serve those who are in a vulnerable state in life, the elderly. Take a moment during this month and reflect on the ways the elders in your life have given you wisdom and hope in a time of uncertainty and change. Consider the pearls of wisdom you might leave with those coming behind you.
Our goal is to share useful information and updates in elder law and elder services. We would like to hear from you! Take a moment and give us your suggestions, questions, or
.
We look forward to communicating with you!

Holiday Blues - Depression in the Elderly
According to the National Institutes of Health; of the 35 million Americans age 65 or older, about 2 million suffer from full-blown depression. Another 5 million suffer from less severe forms of the illness. This represents about 20% of the senior population -- a significant proportion. Depression in the elderly is difficult to diagnose and is frequently untreated. The symptoms may be confused with a medical illness, dementia, or malnutrition due to a poor diet. Many older people will not accept the idea that they have depression and refuse to seek treatment.

| Home Energy Tips for Older Adults
Older adults and their family caregivers can take the following actions to stay warm economically and safely this winter:
Find out about financial energy assistance programs: Many states, counties and cities provide programs that assist older adults with winter heating costs. Your local Area Agency on Aging is a good source of information about available community programs and eligibility requirements. Ask about the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP), the Weatherization Assistance Program, and other energy assistance. To identify your Area Agency on Aging, contact the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 or www.eldercare.gov.
