Healthy Hints

  • Another reason to eat almonds everyday!  In addition to being an excellent source of vitamin E, protein, fiber and essential fatty acids, almonds also function as a prebiotic, food for the good bacteria in your gut.  That means a stronger digestive tract and immune system, and less inflammation.
  • Zinc deficiency can cause serious problems with your immune system.  Deficiency signs may include underarm and foot odor, adrenal
    issues,
diminished sense of taste and/or smell and white spots on the fingernails. To help you stay healthy this winter, eat pumpkin seeds daily.  Not only are they high in zinc, but they help kill parasites and benefit the prostate.
  • According to research published in Harvard's Men's Health Watch, a man can reduce his prostate cancer risk by 52% if he drinks an average of 4-7 glasses of red wine per week.  Beware, however, like breast cancer risk, the risks may outweigh the benefits when the number of glasses goes up beyond that number.  However,
     I found no research
    supporting that theory.
  • Remember that optimists tend to live longer, happier lives than pessimists, so feel free to ask Sonya for pointers on how to be the ultimate optimist.
toxic waste Are We Toxic Garbage Dumps?
It is unbelieveable to me to read just a snippet of the toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis, chemicals that 100 years ago did not exist.  Our bodies do not know how to process many of these chemicals individually, and certainly not in combination.  This newsletter is going to focus on how to avoid many of these toxins, and how to help protect ourselves from the rest.  Hopefully, the tools we are going to suggest will be easy to implement and maintain.  We want you and your families to be as healthy as possible - so together we will be reaching new Heights of Health!
cell phoneIs Your Cellphone Harming You?

Do you remember everyday life BEFORE cell phones? Seems like an eternity ago, doesn't it?  In the past ten years, we have all become extremely attached to our cell phones. In fact, the mere suggestion that our cell phones might be hazardous to our health, sends us reeling.

Recently, there have been several studies about the cancer risk associated with cell phones and the electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) they emit.  Cell phone use has also been linked to memory loss, depression, loss of energy, irritability, difficulty in concentration, weakened immune system, and headaches.  These studies about the cancer risk have yielded conflicting results. However, there is enough evidence, in my mind, to raise some serious concerns.

In an effort to better understand the controversy, Congress met this September with some of the nation's top doctors and scientists to testify about their findings. Dr. David Carpenter, the director of the Institute of Health and Environment at the University of Albany, believes that cell phones cause cancer. Carpenter also believes that cell phones can affect children more profoundly than adults.
In support of his claims, Carpenter cited a study by Swedish researchers that determined that children who use cell phones before the age of 20, increase their risk of developing brain cancer up to five times. Although Congress did not take any action at that time, the fact that there was enough evidence to warrant the meeting is significant.

Despite our government's lack of action, many warnings have been issued over the past years regarding possible health damage caused by cellphones. In Toronto, officials have advised the youth to limit their cell phone usage. Here in the States, the director of The University of Pittsburg Cancer Institute, Dr. Ronald Heberman, made big waves when he issued an advisory to his faculty and staff of approximately 3000 people. His advisory warned them of the possible health risks of cell phone use, as well as recommended to them that children not be able to use cell phones unless there is an emergency.
Dr. Vini Khurana, a British neurosurgeon and health researcher who has published over 20 scientific papers and has reviewed over 100 studies about the results of cellular phone usage, plainly states, "Mobile phones could have health consequences far greater than asbestos and smoking." That sounds pretty drastic, but he strongly believes "there is a significant and increasing body of evidence for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumors."

So, what are we to do, throw away our cell phones? For most of us, that is not really an option. These communication devices are so a part of our lives that not having them would necessitate major life changes. Even with the warnings, the fact is that we do not yet know how detrimental cell phone usage is to the body (and specifically the brain).

Those of us concerned about long-term exposure have several options. We can text message, use headsets or earpieces (not wireless), or use landlines instead of mobile phones. I would also highly recommend not keeping your cell phone attached to your body. Most people carry their phone on their hip, which is awfully close to the prostate or female organs, or in their shirt pocket, which is usually right above the heart. These are not places I would want any extra radiation entering my body.

Regardless of how you limit exposure, I would highly recommend using a cell phone diode. A diode is a small composite of natural materials that emits at least 47 different energy frequencies, providing maximum effective protection from  the harmful EMFs coming from the phone (or other electronic device on which it is attached). It lasts a lifetime and is so simple to place on the phone. If you are using a wireless headpiece, I would recommend placing one on that, as well. Diodes can be placed on all electronic equipment, such as computers and televisions. Never before have we been so bombarded with EMFs, so take advantage of the tools available to help protect yourself and your loved ones from the effects.

plastic Reducing Plastic Exposure

We all know that recently the big buzz has been about plastics and how harmful they are.  It's about time the news was made public, I only wish it had been before we had all fed our children out of plastic bottles...At least we can do something about the plastics we are being exposed to now and in the future.  So, here's my list of some simple changes you may not have thought about to help reduce our exposure:

1) Stop using plastic storage containers for your leftovers.  Sounds easy enough, but remember that we are usually putting away leftovers while they are still warm and that may leach out the harmful chemicals into your food.  You can find glass containers at Target, Container Store, and  Walmart.   The plastic lids are okay if they are not touching the food.

2) Don't get into your car when it is hot from the sun.  Open the doors and let it air out first.  The hot air inside your car can be filled with harmful chemicals (including xeno-estrogens) from the seats and dashboard.

3) Check you coffee maker or tea maker.  A better alternative would be a french press or stainless steel percolator.  A lot of other small appliances are based on heating food/drink in plastic, such as popcorn poppers, rice makers, blenders.

4) Eliminate canned foods wherever possible.  They are lined with plastic and have already been heated, during processing.  The more acidic the food (i.e. tomatoes), the more leaching occurs.

5)  Find stainless steel travel mugs for your hot drinks and use them when you order drinks to-go.  Same goes for to-go containers (eat in or bring your own container).

6) Don't wash anything plastic in the dishwasher.  The heat can release those nasty chemicals and deposit them on other dishes. (I can't tell you how much my husband loves this new rule.)

7) Drink out of glass bottles (and you can re-use them).  You never know how hot the plastic got in transit, and thus, how much of the chemicals were leached into the water or drink..

To help remove harmful plastic chemicals (xeno-estrogens) from the body, remember to do kidney, liver and colon cleanses regularly.  The Ion Foot Bath is a great aid, too.  Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and brussels sprouts) are very important in this process, as well.  They contain Indole-3-Carbinol which can help the body metabolize these chemicals.  A supplement containing this compound is typically much more potent in cases of hgh exposure to plastics.

Also, make sure you have us check you to see if you are reactive to plastics and have the sensitivity cleared through NAET.
