Wanna be a Needle Know It All?

"Needle Know It Alls" Tip Series

Two: The Wing / Hemstitch Needle

Wing with Fabric This needle is used to create decorative holes in the fabric without cutting the threads. You see this technique used in heirloom work, such as Hemstitching which is a pattern of decorative holes on the surface of the fabric. This technique works best on natural fibers such as linen and batiste because the fibers will remain pushed out of place to form the decorative holes, rather than try to return to their flat position, as a synthetic fiber will do. Using the Wing needle on the bias also works well to form the holes in the fabric.

Double Wing
The Double Wing needle has two types of needles attached to one shank: one regular needle and one wing needle. It is used in the same manner as the Wing Needle, making one large and one regular hole.

Stay tuned for more "Needle Know It Alls," as the year goes on. But next month we'll show you a BERNINA presser foot that you can use with your new found "know it all" knowledge on Wing needles!
