Embarrassed wasn't quite the word for it.  My tennis partner Page and I got waxed on the tennis court, 0-6, 0-6.  Nothing Earth shattering, but we haven't lost a match in ages.  I certainly recall the match three years ago when we lost to the 80-year-old plus team at Old Providence, one of them had a metal hip . . . at least we were in that match.  Normally, I would say we were humbled by both deserving teams, but the truth of the matter is that we don't go to practice, we don't hit on weekends and we still win week after week, year after year and give little effort to our games and are still a scary team to most opponents.  Tennis used to be my craft before I found the joys of food, wine and family.  I remember the state ranking, the national championship at Davidson and even a 4.0 Charlotte singles championship last fall, eons ago.  I truly appreciate the beating . . . it woke me up.  I wasn't even enjoying our matches without a true challenge.  The hour has come to stop going through the motions on the court and find my tennis pro Derek for some early morning drills and cardio workouts.  It is time to dust off and live again by my "work hard, play hard" motto.

Many of us are go through these same motions in different aspects of our lives.  We fail to push ourselves because we are already doing what is adequate enough. . . but I need to know, "How do we push ourselves when we are already meeting the expectations of others?  How do we continue to go to our edge and adventure into unexplored territory like the Amazon jungle?"  I believe this happens when we fail to live in the moment and stop listening to our inner voice that tells us that we can be better than our last effort.  We need to question ourselves, allow others to challenge us and not be afraid to do the work, ourselves.  Maybe we are lucky enough to have someone in our family, place of worship or business who points out this complacency or maybe a competitor shows us a more innovative way.  This is how we evolve, how we change and how we become a better community.

In our twenty years at Something Classic, we have certainly offered a creative edge to our customers with creative culinary and designer decor over the years. We want you and your guests to walk into the room and say "wow!"  And, we want your event to be a one-of-kind, never-been-done-before original piece of art!   It is our goal to offer you better service than you had at last year's party and offer flowers and linens that make your senses sizzle.  This fall we will be replacing some items in our cafes with items that will surely become new favorites like our chocolate banana bread and snappy ginger cookies.   Don't worry, the spicy pimiento cheese and classic chicken pie aren't going anywhere.  But, we are going to push your comfort zone a little, tempt you with new creations, and ask you to respect Mother Earth at Something Classic, in your home and workplace . . . our staff is rising to new challenges and taking care of business as I may be in a little late . . . I've got a date on the court.
