Note from Kelly

Welcome back my decorating friends!

I hope you all enjoyed the wonderful weather this summer has brought us. I tried to go to our NH home as much as possible this summer.  It is so peaceful and beautiful and I especially like the laid back lifestyle.

Fall usually brings an eagerness to begin those indoor projects. But with the economy still in the dumps, no one is ready to spend money on new furnishings.  So back to basics again; using what we already own in different ways.  Or sometimes even better, taking things away to give your room a new look. Take a look at your bookshelves, maybe you can take a few knick-knacks away to make the shelves look cleaner.  Maybe those heavy old window treatments in the dining room are depressing you.  Is it possible to remove them and just have open windows?  Think of all the light you will have in the room.  It is sometimes hard to edit, to know what to get rid of.  Just look around your home and try one small change at a time.  Sometimes that is all you need to update and refresh your home.  And of course the quickest and least expensive way to update any room is with paint!

If you have any questions or suggestions, please write me kellybernierdesigns@cox.net and let me know what you would like to read and learn more about.  Any subjects you would like me to discuss?  Any questions you would like personally answered?  I enjoy your comments and questions.

Books add Depth
I use books in my decorating quite a bit. A few books stacked up two or three, with or without an accessory sitting on top, add a bit of charm to any room. Use the books as little pedestals or as a simple touch to personalize your space.  I have always left the covers on the books, but I read this week that most people remove their hard back covers. Do you?  I always thought the cover was colorful and interesting, but after I had removed a few of the covers, I noticed the hard books themselves are in beautiful colors. I found a pretty light blue book, a nice red and a lot of Stephen King black. Another good tip- if the spine of the books is ruined, just turn the book around and see the 'neutral' pages of the book.

                             Pixie Dust Painting   Ben Moore
This is an example of how important it is to bring color samples home to try!  The color on walls is the color of this paint chip in upper left corner called Antique Yellow OC-103.  Does not look the same does it?  This is just an example of how different colors look in print and how different the colors will look anywhere else.  Be sure to test the paint colors at home!
