Hello everyone! Can you believe Spring is just around the corner? Time is speeding on. Hopefully the weather will warm up soon. Spring is a favorite time of year to update and refresh furnishings inside of the house before heading outside to garden. You do not need to spend alot of money to make big Springtime changes. By simply adding a couple of bright pillows, putting a large bunch of forsythia in tall vase(s) and opening shades and window treatments you can open up the room to the outdoors and let in the sunshine.
In the next article about color, read what is the hot new color for 2009, which my favorite- Purple! I am seeing it everywhere this year including clothing and in home furnishings.

Expect the Unexpected
in Color in 2009
The biggest textile event in the industry is Heimtextil in Germany. It is
the place to see what is new, fresh and hot in fabrics. According to sources,
these are the new colors for 2009: deep purples and plums, shown with lime
greens, grays from soft silver to rich charcoal, hot pinks and bright oranges,
and rich golds. Purple was the color of the show. Blackened plum served as the
backdrop in several booths as walls were painted this deep color to highlight
the other hues in the wonderful fabrics.

Dear Kelly
A quick question regarding drapes. Is the rule of thumb to purchase 2.5 times the width of the window? This would be for the sliders in our condo.

Yes Linda, 2.5 - 3 times the width is the standard for window treatments. Consider before buying drapes- Do you have furniture in the room already that you are keeping? If not, you should purchase the largest item(the most expensive piece) first and work around that fabric. If the fabric is also a neutral, like the walls, have some fun with it and bring in some color and pattern to the room.

Decorating Tips
Just a couple quick ideas for easy, beautiful, inexpensive decorating:
- Look to nature's palette when decorating. If you have a neutral palette, look closely at your favorite flowers and pull your spring colors from it. Bright pink, purple, sunshine yellow and orange etc. Nature always gives us great ideas for design, take a clue from nature just outside your window.

Using a collection of mirrors can let the outdoors in by placing them across from windows and doors where they reflect the green trees and landscaping from outside. When grouping the mirrors, use similar frames and/or styles. For example, all gold frames, or complementing wood frames. This arrangement can make small spaces look bigger and dark spaces seem larger by catching the light. Mirrors are also a great alternative to expensive art.
