6th ANNUAL CITY OF ANACORTES BARK IN THE PARK DOG FESTIVAL
Hundreds of happy, smiling, tail-wagging dogs....that's what I saw at this year's Bark in the Park Dog Festival on Saturday, June 26, in Storvik Park! Oh, what fun for dogs and people alike! The Humane Society of Skagit Valley's own dogs, five-year old Joey (a.k.a. JoJo) and four-year old Ellie were doing lots of smiling and tail-wagging too! JoJo won a dog-edible cake in the Cake Walk, and Ellie won a medal in an agility event. Contests were held for the best tail wag, best costume, bark and howl, wackiest dog trick, best kisser, peanut butter eating and dog/human look alikes. There were also demonstrations of dog obedience, flyball and agility, as well as hot dog and tennis ball bobbing pools, a sandbox with buried dog bones and an obstacle course. The HSSV's booth, organized by Karen and Bruce Roberts, offered dog and cat toys, packets of information, dog pictures to color, T-shirts to purchase, as well as a contest to guess how many dog biscuits filled a big jar. The winner of the contest was awarded a $35 grooming gift certificate to Pampered Pets and Grooming in Mount Vernon. Thanks, Wendy, for offering this great prize! Wendy can be reached at 360-424-7101. And thank you to all the volunteers who helped, especially Karen and Bruce. I especially enjoyed meeting a few of the dogs who were previously adopted from the Humane Society of Skagit Valley. Their new families found time to take them to this fun event, and were proud to show off their new family member. I think I speak for everyone when I say lots of fun was had by all the dogs and their people! Let's do it again next year! Written by Megan Strong, Humane Society Thrift Shop Manager |
2nd Annual Anne Jackson
Memorial Run/Walk - The Results are in!
Saturday, August 21, 2010, was a beautiful day for our 2nd Annual Anne Jackson Memorial Run/Walk at the Humane Society of Skagit Valley. The temperature was perfect for a run or walk for people and dogs, and it didn't rain! As Skagit County residents know, Anne Jackson was the Skagit County Sheriff's Deputy with a love for animals who was killed in the line of duty two years ago. Approximately 100 runners and 100 dog walkers participated to raise $9,500 for the Humane Society in Deputy Jackson's memory. The Top Dog winners were Ron Dow and Ray Lucero for raising the most money. Thanks, guys!
The winner of the 5K race was Jason Gulley, and the winner of the 10K race was Mark Cook. Way to go! Five lucky dogs found forever homes that day: 1. A stray yorkie was placed with Anne Jackson's mom in California. 2. A German shepherd was placed with Anne Jackson's sister. 3. A 9-year old springer spaniel mix named Gracie was adopted by a Humane Society Thrift Shop customer, who had just intended to walk a shelter dog. 4. A Bernese mountain dog was adopted by Top Dog winners Ron Dow and Ray Lucero, who had just come to walk with their dog Gus and possibly a shelter dog. 5. The last of the rescued puppy mill rottweilers named Memi found a loving home with a couple in Arlington and their other rescued rottweilers. A HUGE thanks goes to all those who helped. Thanks to all the runners and walkers; Race/Walk Committee members and Herb Oberg, Race Director; Terry Sentinella of Skagit Runners Association; "Fab-Tech," who donated a flatbed truck for the award presentations; Consumer Rental for advertising; Costo; Alger Fire Department and Skagit County Fire Protection District #6 volunteers; and the Skagit Valley Herald. We are thrilled with the outcome of this event! We appreciate the opportunity to honor the memory of Deputy Anne Jackson and support the Humane Society of Skagit Valley. Hope to see you all again next year! |

The Humane Society of Skagit Valley in Action
Dear Humane Society of Skagit Valley, We want to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to talk with us and seeing the potential we could provide for a pet. Everyone at the shelter was very courteous and genuinely concerned about our desires as owners and the animal's needs as a pet. We adopted Henry, who now is known as Nukka, the pit bull terrier mix a little over one year ago. Nukka has fit into our family as if he has always been there. Nukka is also a dog park favorite among pets and people. He is very smart, loving, and very quick to learn. We sincerely appreciate all you have done for us. We gladly and happily recommended you to our family and friends. We hope you continue to do wonders for everyone else who walks through your doors like you have for us. Thank you again, Todd and Vanessa Showalter
