Agency Spotlight: The George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy, Inc. Saturday School |
The George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy, Inc. has been in operation since 1986 and has enhanced the academic achievement of over 20,000 children in Montgomery County, Maryland.
The mission of Saturday School is to enhance student mastery of core academic subjects-specifically ready, language arts, and mathematics-to prepare students grade 1-12 for the challenges of college and career. The program operates on Saturday mornings, starting in September until May at 12 MCPS schools.
The goal this school year is to serve 3,200 students. To do so, many volunteers are still needed at all sites. Volunteers do not need prior teaching experience as they will work with a certified lead teacher. Middle and high school students who volunteer can earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours.
According to Lori Thomas, Office Coordinator, "Volunteers who commit to the entire school year are able to see the academic and social growth of the students over the course of the year and see them dream, believe and achieve toward their potential. It's such a rewarding experience! We could not do what we do without all our volunteers."

JCA Heyman Interages Center is Designated as Program of Distinction |
|
The Program of Distinction designation serves as the U.S. benchmark for intergenerational programs.
Generations United has proudly named the Jewish Council for the Aging's Heyman Interages Center a 'Program of Distinction' within the intergenerational community.
"We congratulate the JCA Heyman Interages Center for earning this distinction and their dedication to intergenerational practices," says Donna Butts, Executive Director of Generations United. The application and review process is rigorous. Achieving this recognition is a major accomplishment and says a program employs best practices and effectively serves the surrounding community."
The JCA Heyman Interages Center recruits and trains adults (age 50 and better) to mentor and tutor students in the public schools, enabling students to improve their chance of social and academic success.
Volunteer opportunities are also provided for children and youth who interact with isolated seniors to simultaneously enrich the students' and the seniors' lives. |
